Jerry Asher Returns to DC with Stories from the Road
New River Gorge
And a good time was had by all. Jerry's triumphant return to Washington, DC was a great success. We planned a little get together with Jerry to meet and greet his fellow EVA/DC members and supporters at the Fuddruckers in Silver Spring, Maryland and to hear tales of triumph and tribulation on his great adventure. The surprise discovery along his way was the New River Gorge in West Virginia. Asked what he thought of the gorge, he replied, "It was gorgeous." Then realizing that he had made an unintentional pun, he said,"It was really beautiful." There were stories of heroes coming to his rescue when his can view went on the fritz, and stories of kind gestures along the way. He was so busy talking that he didn't notice that his food, a veggie burger and a salad never came. Several attempts by Charlie and others to get Jerry's order delivered to the table were met with apologies, but followed by no food. The food finally arrived just as Jerry was winding down from his tales of the great adventure. We all went out to see the Spirit of DC afterward to get a lesson in reading the Can View and to talk and listen some more.

PHEV Day 45 - Friday, 15 July 2008. En Route Back to DC via Leesburg, VA with stayover at Takoma Village Cohousing
PHEV Day 44 - Thursday, 24 July 2009. Visiting the US Army JAG School and Tooling Around Charlottesville ... Even Charging Up at the Amtrak Station!
Cheers PHEV3A'rs, EVADC'rs, and EVnthusiasts, One & All -
Thursday was most pleasant to cool our tires and heels for the "Spirit" and EVJerry, respectively. No hypermiling! Just having the "Spirit" bonding with Dennis Mills, Educational TV Director at the US Army Judge Advocate General School (JAGS) at the University of Virginia, right in Charlottesville, VA. Dennis had his associates join in -- Norm, Kevin and Keith. Keith and Dennis got to bond with the "Spirit" in going out to do lunch. Keith, by the way, is a retired combat cameraman, who readily started snapping pixs of the "Spirit." He also owns a 2004 Prius, I believe. He also got loaded up with lots of PHEV/EV-related literature, especially Hobbit's Prius Research Laboratory on wheels Website: <http://techno-fanom.org~hobbit/#prius>
Afterwards, the "Spirit" took EVJerr for a re-acquainting tour of Charlottesville. Note: EVJerry worked at the JAG School back in 1998-1999 timeframe. As time permitted, the "Spirit" payed a visit to the Amtrak Station; she also made a request out of the Amtrak Lead Ticket Agent, Bill Thomas(434) 296-4559 to charge up and do a happy snap photo session. Also, Danielle Dow, Amtrak Ticket Agent, received PHEV/EV literature. Even Jerome Trahan, Amtrak Senior Marketing Rep, got on-line to vouch for the good nature of the "Spirit" with her neat Amtrak signage upfront!
And then, Amtrak Agent, Garland Harper, came in from the lawn mowing scene, and instantly started relating to the "Spirit." He saw the FuturEV as electric, green and clean. Quite importantly, Garland took some really good shots of the "Spirit" contentedly sipping electric juice at the Amtrak Station.. Watch for the pixs to be posted, too!
Later on in the evening, Dennis Mills' son, Ben Mills, came back to Charlottesville from Germantown, MD, where he works at Thales as an Associate RF Engineer. As a ham operator as well, Ben personally knows Bob Bruninga, the US Naval Academy professor who set the "Spirit" up with the APRS (Automatic Position Recording System). Ben is also game to join in on the e-mapping of the "Spirit" -- passing on in the morning of the 25th of July, the Special Notice Announcement for <www.db0anf.de> for tracking past movements of the "Spirit" -- that is go to the website, type in "phev3a" and click on MAP ... and voila, there's an amazing APRS movement set of PHEV3A data for the PHEV All Around America.

PHEV Day 43 - Wednesday, 23 July 2008. On the Run in Charleston, WVA. First with a "Wake Up" Call from V100 FM Radio Hostess Jenny Murray
Cheers PHEV'rs, EVADC'rs, EVnthusiasts, One & All -
Instead of waking up earlier enough to call into the radio station, it was being on the run for EVJerr in Charleston -- that is first, with a "wake up" call from V100 FM Radio Hostess, Jenny Murray, at 8:10AM. A sleepy EVJerr recovered sufficiently to call back to the Talk Show and go live with Jenny for 15 minutes on the merits of PHEV/EV technology in doing 101MPG assisted with repeated recharging the electric batteries, having an attitude of NOPEC as well as "No Plug, No Deal! And also creating a FuturEV that green & clean, sustainable & electric in order to regain American energy independence with electricity and so on.
After packing and sorting, gathering and packing belonging in the "Spirit," it was off to do a noon time display of the "Spirit" at West Virginia Radio Corporation parking lot. But with re-charging! Also, another EV owner would be coming!
Once there at the parking lot, the "Spirit" spotted Larry Harris' NEV (neighborhood electric vehicle) or LSEV (low speed EV). Larry from Poca, WVA was regaling Jenny Smith from WV Radio with the fine points of drivingEV. Note: Larry was there with a blue, spiffy looking new Miles NEV
On the parking lot, the "Spirit" said "Adieu" to Larry and his neighbor electric vehicle, and stayed charing til about 2:00PM -- entertaining even some various new WV Radio personalities like Radio Engineer Levi Phillips
The Run from Charleston to Charlottesville was essentially uneventful but wonderfully scenic, peaceful and tranquil along Blue Highway 60. Recordings were 54.6MPG for 141 miles; 55.7 for 151.4, 53.0 for 80 and 57.2MPG for 127.3 miles. Fill-up was withShell regular at $3.86 x 9.729/gallon = $37.64 in Clifton Forge, VA, at 75,757. Arrival was around 10:30PM, but sleepy time came around 2:00AM, once again to keep from being OBE ... as in Overcome By Email (most definitely a losing proposition!)

PHEV Day 42 - Tuesday, 22 July 2008. Run to Charleston, WVA -- That is Charlie's Capital Town for PHEV3A Spokesman.
Cheers PHEV3A'rs, EVADC'rs, and EVnthusiasts, One & All -
After an exceptionally pleasing surprise with the NPS New River Gorge's scenic beauty, along with its railroad and coal histories, it was almost 1:00PM with 88-degree clime greeting the "Spirit" and EVJerr when they took off on Hwy 19 and 60 for the WVA State Capital - Charleston. The hypermiling had figures as follows: 50.4MPG for 22 miles; 56.4 for 29; 57.3 for 40; 57.5 for 54; 57.5 for 61 and finally 54.8MPG for 87.6 miles. The 5-minute blue bar tally showed: 35MPG, 25, 200, 200, 80, 80, 30, 100, 100 35, 60, 60, 55, 55, 60, 50, 60, and ... 75MPG.
After taking a few happy snaps of the golden domed State Capital of West Virginia with, some showing scaffolding standing, the "Spirit" started scouting out the town for a place to get a charge. Lo and behold, the West Virginia Radio Corporation building loomed out on 1111 Virginia St. Into action, EVJerr sprang with PHEV/EV literature in hand and into the arms of Receptionist, Ashley Prowse. Ashley was prevailed upon to pass it along to someone else. That someone else proved to be Mike Agnello
Mike conversed at length with EVJerr and invited him to go on live at 3:00PM with his 58 Live co-host, Rich Johnson. And this did happen! It was the first time on the road with radio for the Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle All Around America (PHEV3A)EVducational Tour! All in all, the interviewing by Mike and Rick lasted some 20 minutes in a 40-minute period interspaced wtih commercials, sports and other related breaks. One result was that a fellow would be coming in on Wednesday with his electric car to join the "show & tell" demo display right on the WVA Radio Corporation parking lot on Wednesday at noon. Another result was that the another radio personality, FM V100 Host, Steve Bishop, got into the action and would have his FM 99.9 Co-host, Jenny Murray, have EVJerry do a live call in on Wednesday morn.
Mike even invited the "Spirit" to show off her signage and stuff at a evening baseball game at the Applachian Power Park, where West Virginia Power was to play Rome Braves. It was a done deal and the first local public event for the "Spirit," too! After getting quarters at Microtel, showering and returning back to the radio station, Mike showed the "Spirit" and EVJerr to the ballpark and a most excellent spot to park and demo ... with permission already extended by the General Manager, Ryan Gate. Security Guard, Tim Groom, kept on eye on the "Spirit" as well as APP Staff Member Juan Chic; they were photographed looking over the "Spirit." The evening ballpark theme was a hoot -- "Bark in the Park" - a night out for everyone's poochie ... at no charge! Lots of dog lovers took advantage of this neat event and bring their dogs to bark in the park! Afterwards, Ryan got a personal CANView look-see with the "Spirit," whose PHEV technology definitely appeals to him.
After the game, even with intermittant rains, it was back to Microtel and endeavoring to catch up on Gads! emails til about 2:00PM. But Alas! it also occurred without finding any E-juice outlet for the "Spirit."

PHEV Day 41 - Monday, 21 July 2008. Blue Ridge Parkway Continuation Run from VA-NC Borderline
Cheers PHEV3A'rs, EVADC'rs, and EVnthusiasts, One & All -
From the Galax Hostel in late morning, the "Spirit" slowly but steadily began to leave the Blue Ridge Parkway for the Town of Galax for a fill-up and library Internet access. On this the first run, the "Spirit" recorded: 74.0MPG for 8 miles; 64.9 for 12; and 62.8MPG for 14.3 miles under what's to be termed "modified" EVMode -- only able to use the OEM NiMH battery pack for one mile or so, then wait for it to be replenished up from the PBA battery pack plus the engine generating electricity. The blue bar 5-minute segment tally was: 90 and 100MPG.
The Galax Public Library held "Spirit's" attention first. And it was EVer so delightful because the Chief Librarian, Laura Bryant, took a shine to the "Spirit" and allowed her to charge up on an outside plug of this modern and well designed facility, which does Galax proud. Other staff members, especially the ladies, were most helpful; one summer hire, Marie Orton, wearing a "Green" T-shirt was most attentive, and a regular staff member, David Robinson, got PHEV/EV literature and a "Spirit of DC" business card. After expressing THANKS and leaving Laura with a handful of PHEV/EV literature for building of a "Vertical File," the dynamo duo were off to fill-up before taking on the parkway for hypermiling runs.
Fill-up at the Valero Station in Galax went easily enough with $3.94/Gal x 9.038 gallons = $35.69, except EVJerr forgot to record the overall mileage. Best calculation was approximately 74,291.
On the second run on the Blue Ridge Parkway at quite low speeds, rarely exceeding 35MPH, these results showed up: 58.7MPG for 24; 60.1 for 35; 61.9 for 43; 58.6MPG for 50 miles. The 5-minute blue bar tally had these numbers: 98MPH; 100; 50; 75; 100 100MPG.
After a NPS Visitor Center break and with the temperature at 86 degrees, a third parkway run was attempted with first and only result recorded as 90.4MPG for 14 miles, because the the battery readings of 119 degrees, 116, 114, 111, and 109 kept the "EVMode Denied" on for some additional 13 miles.
By the time, the "Spirit" got EVJerr to Shoney's for a preliminary New River EVA chartering session with Mark Hanson
Mark, Dave, and Doc got to see the "Spirit" just before sunset and after a definitely a high 97-degree run thru Roanoke on US 221. After dinner, and feeling wide awake, EVJerr went on thru the night on Hwy 11/460 from VA and on into WVA. Later, it was WVA on HWY 16/19 to finally a few hours of car snoozing at the NPS New River Gorge until it opened at 9:00AM. What showed up was 52.8MPG for 157.1 more miles of hypermiling in WVA. Yet, staying over at New River Gorge NPS proved a most unexpected delight of nature's beauty and man's amazement.
EVer,
"Spirit" & EVJerry
En toto, the "Spirit" went 42.8MPG for 157.1 mile

PHEV Day 40 - Sunday, 20 July 2008. Blue Ridge Parkway Run
Cheers PHEV3A'rs, EVADC'rs, and EVnthusiasts, One & All -
While the "Spirit" was resting in the shade, EVJerry was attending Church services with Julian & Judy Norris at the First United Methodist Church in Valdese, NC. A most informative sermon came from Reverend Dan "Dr Seuss-Loving" Lyons about "Marvin K. Moony, Will You Please Move! One has to recall that "moon" as a verb means: to spend time in idle reverie, dream, daydream, wander ... . So in short, it seemed that the "Spirit" moved EVJerry along the green grassroots level for doing the EVducational Tour all around America with one PHEV.
Before heading out on the blue highways for the Blue Ridge Parkways, the spirit got to visit Bill & Laura Satterwhite, Church friends of Sandy, wife of Sonni Dyer, the son of Judy Norris. Julian and Judy have two grandsons -- Jeremiah and Gideon as well. Bill is definitely at the grassroots level, being elected to the City Council of Rutledge College, NC.
On the first stop at Linn Cove Vidaduct, a NPS Visitor Center, the "Spirit" had her pixs being taken by the Walton Family -- Richard, Sandra and daughter, Brittany, all whom were quite keen on the PHEV in particular.
Blue Ridge Parkway had mixed numbers: 99.9MPG for 4 Miles; 52.0 for 7; 42.6 for 46 with all the up's and down's of the Blue Ridge Mountains. At one point, there were recorded 2 x 100MPG 5-minute blue bar readings, which was followed by a 20MPG and then a 100MPG.
Dinner was in Boone, where a Junior transfer to Appalacha State University, Katie Linamen, mentioned her major being Graphic Design. Katie got EV literature, and in particular, Larry Wexlar's solar electric car, which was in need of graphics! Also,
she was invited to hunt down Professor Jack Martin there at ASU.
The Blue Ridge Parkway proved to be quite a delight. Yet, a slow and most enjoyable EVenture, too! And that required re-calculating a $25 Galax Hostel stayover right at Mileage Marker 214.5 with deligntful hostel operators -- the seniors, Alex & Lois Goji (276) 236-4962 ... versus getting to Salem, VA, on Sunday evening, as intended. Richard Shipley
The day's overall tally had the "Spirit" at 52.2MPG for 177.9 miles on the Blue Ridge Parkway.

PHEV Day 39 - Saturday, 19 July 2008. Meeting Up with Piedmont Carolina EVA Members at Charlotte Energy Solutions
Cheers PHEV3A'rs, EVADC'rs, and EVnthusiasts -
With temperature at 75 degrees on a clear Carolina day, the "Spirit of DC" had Paula Moore as her driver with EVJerr as the "Ride Along" ... following Mike in his beloved blue e-Fiat convertible. We were all en route to Mark Englander's Charlotte Energy Solutions
By the way, here are some quick tally numbers for the 'newly bonded" with the "Spirit" -- on Friday, Mike in his first bonding run with the "Spirit" got 51.5MPG for 5 miles ... with two x 5-minute blue bars with a declared 101 MPG on Saturday, Paula got 59.1 for 5 miles and 65.0 for 12 with one 5-minute blue bar denoting 101MPG.
Once at Charlotte Energy Solutions, PCEVA President, Clifford Metcalf, warmly greeted the "Spirit," Paula, and EVJerry. Also, PCEVA Members took to the "Spirit" immediately! He graciously provided snacks, too! What a Guy! Expect Clifford to also put in a webblog.
PCEVA'rs took in the "Spirit" as well as Mike & Paula's blue e-Fiat plus lots of solar and EV-related items such as Sedgeway and Zap scooters. EAA, PIA, EVADC and EV-related literature was distributed to the dozen of PCEVA attending the 10:00AM meeting.
At 11:00AM, EVJerr slipped away for a telephonic conference-calling EAA Board meeting, leaving the "Spirit" to entertain the interested folks on her own. Especially Mark Englander, who soon to be a
After the meeting, and extending a most grateful THANKS for every thing to Paula and Mike for such wonderful hospitality, an wondrous media opportunity appeared -- Mark's friend and former work associate at WCNC TV6 (NBC), Elaine Cahn showed up at Charlotte Energy Solutions. Quickly it followed that since "Go Green" WCNC didn't come to the store as expected, then at least the very least, the "Spirit" would follow Elaine to the WCNC TV6 Station, which she did!
There at WCNC, with the "Spirit" enjoying some shade in 90+ degrees, Elaine introduced EVJerr to the Assignment Manager, Scott Flint, who immediately received a handful of EV-related literature. Scott liked the prospect of videotaping the "Spirit" and it was only a short time -- just wait for a cameraman! While waiting, EVJerr got to meet a number of quite friendly WCNC staff members, one of whom got a handful of literature when it was known he owned the lime green Prius parked outside. Soon one cameraman, Ken Shermer, got the assignment and started videotaping the "Spirit" both as a static disply and in action. So keep a watch on a "Go Green" story from WCNC TV6 - NBC about the PHEV All Around America EVducation Tour. Hope Ken in editing keeps "in" the closing remarks about checking out the EAA website and joining up with one of five Carolina Chapters, such as the Piedmont Charlotte EVA.
Afterwards, it was on the road to Valdese, NC to introduce the "Spirit" to old time friends from Fayetteville -- Julian & Judy Norris. Valdese is some 80 miles West of Charlotte in the Blue Ridge Mountains and nearby Hickory. The "Spirit" has never seen the Blue Ridge Mtns and wanted to cool her tires there in trucking up North on Sunday.

Bonding with Miss Spirit and her driver EVJerr - As Reported By Paula Moore of AmpMobilies.com)
PluginPaula and AmpmobileMike here (PCEAA chapter). Well, Miss Spirit of DC has not only honored us with her presence and allowed us to take EVJerry to dinner tonight, BUT she allowed us to pilot her around beautiful Lake Wylie, SC. Very nice ride and quite an experience.
We'll get to be with her tomorrow at Charlotte Energy Solutions, 337 Baldwin Ave., Charlotte, NC with Mark Englander (another PCEAA member)at 10AM. Mark has a cousin of Miss Spirit that Mike will give a face lift to and then convert like Miss Spirit to be a plug-in. If you are in the Asheville area around August 22-24, hopefully Miss Spirit's cousin will be with us at the SEEEXPO (www.seeexpo.com). If you are in the Charlotte, NC or surrounding area, stop by Mark's place to see her as well.
Again, we are honored to have Mr. EVJerry stop by and really honored to be allowed to take Miss Spirit for a spin. A treat to be remembered! Thank you EVJer and thank you Miss Spirit of DC! PluginPaula :)

Day of Rest - Wednesday 16 July 2008, Re-Charging Up. Then, PHEV Day 38 - Thursday, 17 July 2008. Run to South Carolina's Capital - Columbia!
Cheers PHEV3A'rs, EVADC'rs and EVnthusiasts, One & All,
Wednesday proved to be a Day of Rest for re-charging up! Little is there to report out … ‘cause both the “Spirit” and EVJerry were re-charging their batteries at Gary Peterson’s parsonage at the Boganville United Methodist Church (UMC).
Gary took EVJerry in & around Spartanburg, SC. Especially delightful was the Public Library - one of the neatest ones experienced with room, airy spaces, most friendly staff and lots of light. Plus available Internet machines to catch up on emails!
The only EVent for the “Spirit” was UMC Vacation Bible School for dozens of kids, who got to see the “Spirit” … but were more and awed by Bug-E trifolds. However, one adult, Marshall Bogan, was most interested in the “Spirit.” Marshall just happens to work for the South Carolina Department of Transportation and was accordingly loaded up with a packet of PHEV/EV information to share with his fellow SCDOT associates. EVen an invitation was extended for the “Spirit” to do a "show & talk" presentation to SCDOT folks in Union, SC.
EVer from Boganville UMC,
“Spirit” & EVJerry
PS Do take in PHEV Day 38 below.
PHEV Day 38 - Thursday, 17 July 2008. Run to South Carolina’s Capital - Columbia. Then Only 42 More State Capitals for PHEV All Around America to Go!
On a warmer, more typical Carolina muggy Thursday, the “Spirit of DC” was primed to go! She took Gary as additional cargo as the “Ride Along,” But it was after meeting up with Gary's associates, along with EVJerry, for the Thursday morning breakfast for local Methodist ministers at Andy’s in Union, SC -- Tommy, Terry, Kevin, The “Reverend, Dr, Mr” Jim, Dr Krim, and Kelly warmly greeted EVJerry.
Once en route on Hwy 215, the “Spirit” spotted the Union Daily Times, a definite grassroots level newspaper! EVJerry went into action and presented PHEV/EV literature - a packet composed primarily of informative EAA flyers (though dated!). Amazingly, not only did the UDT reporter, Charles Warner CWarner@UnionDailyTime.com show up with camera in hand, he proved EVer so knowledgeable about PHEVs, EVs and definitely was moved by the film, Who Killed the Electric Car? He captured the PHEV3A story, and once his editor approves, I do believe, we’ll see a fine accounting of the “Spirit of DC” and the move towards America's energy independence with green, clean & sustainable electricity.
The run to Columbia proved at first slow, steady and easy in 90+ degree weather with mugginess on the rise! After a series of happy snaps of the green and scenic State Capital, timing prompted an fast, immediate return on I-26 at high speeds so one Reverend Gary would be there for the kids at Vacation Bible School. With such a time commitment, we opted to do AC in view of 97-degree weather on the Interstate and high speeds. Ultimately, the run recorded was 49.7MPG for 177.6 miles.
Tomorrow, the targets of opportunity will be right there en route or in Charlotte, North Carolina -- York Technology Community College - renown for its past with some 21 electric vehicles on campus, Sharon Gilbert GilB7672@Amtrak.com (704) 334-7672 at Amtrak Marketing Department and two Charlotte TV Stations -- WTV Channel 3 CBS and WNCR Channel 6 NBC “Go Green” … that PHEV3A Spokesman, Charlie Garlow, passed before his planned sojourn to Cape Cod and Martha Vineyard in Massachussetts.
EVer,
“Spirit” & Every … cooling our wheels & heels this muggy Carolina eve
PHEV Day 37 - Tuesday, 15 July 2008. Return to Atlanta - Visiting the State Capital as well as Revisiting MLK National Historic Site & JCC
Cheers PHEV3A’rs, EVADC’rs, and EVnthusiasts, One & All -
On a fine yet cool Georgia day with 91-degree temperature and with the “Spirit” recharged at Cousins Rae and Buddy Cook, we were off to located that ellusive WiFi for posting webblogs.
Such ended up being done at the Perk Up Coffee House in Conyers, GA, with an EVer so friendly a welcome from owner, Denise Kelly. Denise even pointed out that the Rockdale Citizen, the local paper, was just across the street from where the parked “Spirit” was showing her stuff and inviting anyone to pick up some EV/PHEV literature. EVJerr dropped off an improptu Media PR packet to the Rockdale Citizen receptionist … in hopes someone would come by the Perk Up for an interview. However, as it turned out, it was Election Day in Georgia. Yet, a most cheery Amy Jones, the assignment editor, endeavored to be most accommodating, but alas! the photographers were elsewhere for the elections.
After finally blogging several days worth of posts (all part of the PHEV experience!), it was the Blue Highway on Hwy 278 on into Georgia’s Capital, where certain happy snaps took place since the batteries were also charged up. Then, on to Martin Luther King National Historic Site for more pixs, especialy of the Kings Masoleum, where the Reverend and Mrs King, Coretta, are entombed for public viewing.
Amazingly enough, a family from Jackson, MS, came by in awe of the “Spirit of DC.” They instantly received PHEV/EV literature. EVJerry even took pixs of Tyrone, Crystal and Dion Ford with the “Spirit of DC.” Also, let’s say a 10-year Dion happily poured over a copy of the Harvey Coachworks’ flyer on the Bug-E! (See www.HarveyEV.com). He agreed to email EVJerry, and EVJerry agreed to give a call, perhaps a visit, when the “Spirit” takes him thru Jackson, Missippissi.
To wrap up the day before traveling late into the evening, or very early into the AM for a stayover with long-time friend, Reverend Gary Peterson at the Boganville Methodist Church, the re-visit to the Jimmy Carter Center proved most EVentful -- the Director of the Jimmy Carter Library and Museum, Jay E. Hakes
By the way, Jay’s book is entitled: Declaration of Energy Independence: How Freedom from Foreign Oli can improve National Security and Environment. Suggest checking out the title on www.Amazon.com or even www.FetchBooks.info.
The travel results for this 91-degree day were: 52.8MPG for 54 miles; 52.4 for 60; 53.4 for 71; 54.1 at 85; 56.4 at 115; 57.6 at 166; and 57.7MPG for 200.4 miles before filling up in SC.
Hypermiling saw only three widely spaced 101MPG- called five-minute blue bars, due to timing amidst the Atlanta rush hour traffic, let alone the number of cars on Georgia-South Carolina blue highways of US 29/79, US 72, and SC 56/49/215 before arriving at 1:00AM.
EVJerry thought the “Spirit” would take advantage of a BP advertised $3.82/gallon, after Georgia prices at $4.09, in Greenwood, SC, but upon examination, it seems that the early AM had an effect -- the receipt showed 9.970 gallons of Premium at $4.24 + $42.36. Oops!
Guess it’s all part of the PHEV3A’ing experience. And such was after holding off more pricey gas in Georgia with just two supplements of four gallon each in Georgia as follows: One Stop: 4.003 gallons at $4.09 = $16.41 in Thomaston, GA, and Amoco in Lithonia, GA: 4.005 gallons at $4.09 = $16.42.
Mileage tally at SC refueling for a total 17.978 gallons over the past few day showed a total cost of $$75.19 with the mileometer registering at: 74,787 miles.

PHEV Day 36 - Monday, 14 July 2008. On to the "Spirit's" Visiting with Two Visionaries -- Energy & Civil Rights, Jimmy Carter and MLK
On Monday afternoon after leaving the Atlanta Hostel, it was the “Spirit's” turn to pay homage to two Visionaries on Energy and Civil Rights -- the former President Jimmy Carter and the late Reverend Martin Luther King.
Yet, there was still an effort to be made -- posting previous typed up posts to the webblog. First effort involved Misha Taylor at the Internet Café on Ponce de Leon Ave, but it was no deal due to cost regarding my limited time. Maybe next time, it'll work out!
Next effort was on to the Jimmy Carter Center to see about WiFI access. JCC Security Guard, Aaron Rotan was in his GEM NEV; he helped in pointing out the Jimmy Carter Library & Museum PR guy, Tony Clark, who was walking out to the parking lot. Tony graciously received PHEV literature before heading out to lunch, noted that no WiFi was available at the library or museum, but suggested checking out that possibility at the separate Jimmy Carter Center.
That possibility led to leaving PHEV-EV literature and calling the JCC Public Info Specialist, a friendly Calvin Sylvester (404) 420-5117. Calvin passed info up the chain of command to Jimmy Carter Library and Museum Director, Jay E. Hakes (See PHEV Day 36). But still no WiFi!
Next, it was on to the Martin Luther King Branch Library with the MLK National Historic Site in sight. There, a most friendly Librarian Lucille Jackson provided Internet access with a machine, but Alas! still no WiFi for downloading from my laptop to post on the "Spirit of DC" webblog. Yet, it was neat to check up on my emails. Note: MLK Branch was only getting WiFI set up.
Afterwards, it was on to visit with the NPS Rangers and take in the MLK National Historic Site … before attempting happy snaps with the “Spirit” but without successful pixs, due seemingly to low battery power for the digital camera batteries and the operator's skills.
It was late afternoon which saw the “Spirit” taking me out to Conyers, GA in a rush on I-20 in order to make a dinner date with my Cousin Rae and her husband Buddy Cook. The Cooks even provided, along with overnight lodging, provided a charge-up opportunity for the “Spirit.“ But only after a bonding experience, where Rae got to experience the “Spirit” running 62.3MPG for 18 miles out to their Rockdale County homestead, and then where Buddy personally bonded with the "Spirit" with another 10-mile trip to wrap up the tally for 62.1MPG for 28 miles.
Before concluding this blog, a key cell phone call was made to in response to www.HybridFest.com leader in Madison, WI -- Eric Powers (608) 729-4082, who had extended a warm e-salutations of good cheer and well wishes for the “Spirit’s” EVducation Tour all around America. Eric was EVnthusiastic! Not only was the upcoming Hybrid Fest for Friday and Saturday the item to share, but Eric mentioned that there was a newly forming EAA Chapter as well. With fond memoirs of last year’s Hypermiling an ‘amazing’ 63.2MPG in the Prius category, placing 13 out of 13 in bettering the EPA Rating by over 20%, the “Spirit” and EVJerry concluded the call with “Wish we were there!” and best regards to Linda, Bradlee, and the rest of the Hybrid Fest gang., busily preparing for the Event, now not only with HEVs but with a number of PHEVs.

PHEV Day 35 - Sunday, 13 July 2008. Georgia Run for Rendez Vous'ing with Members of the EV Club of the South in the Atlanta Area
Cheers PHEV3A'rs, EVADC'rs and EVnthusiasts, One & All -
En route up from Tallahassee, a charged up “Spirit” headed out from Florida on Blue Highways 90 and 219 into Georgia on Hwy 19 and on up essentially to Atlanta … on the way to former President of the EV Club of the South Stephen Taylor’s home in Marietta, where a rendez vous with EVCoS Members was gathering to warmly welcome the “Spirit.”
With the temperature at 84-degrees at 10:55AM, Sunday travel on a delightful day, not too hot for July either, had the “Spirit’s” first run under modified hypermiling -- that is using EVMode in city driving and 5-10MPH less than the posted speed limits. She registered the following:
66.0MPG for 32 miles; 68.0 for 47; 64.6 at 87; and only a recalled 62.8MPG for 200 miles. There was only one 101MPG call for a blue bar.
Note: “Spirit” took on four gallons of gas at $4.09/gallons en route; she’s waiting to fuel up in South Carolina where gas prices are expected to be under $4/gallon.
Upon arrival at Steven’s home, quite a committee was there to welcome the “Spirit of DC” -- EVCoS President Dave Kennington, Stephen Taylor, ZAP-loving Jeremy & Cheryl Webber along with son Paul and his girlfriend, Natalie Iscee, Gary McConville along with friend, Steve Powers, Don Francis, Kipp and Alan Shedd (who by the way runs the Georgia EVRally with EVCoS'rs) … and possibly a few more! The “Spirit” was in fine form; EVJerry was still bouncing from some 300 miles of travel! The gang was so Evnthusiastic, especially observing the PluginSupply.com battery lift and watching the various CANview displays. Only Alan had operated a PHEV per se from his occupation working for an electric coop in Jackson, GA. The electric coop's PHEV was an Energy CS conversion with Valence batteries. For the others, it seemed this was a first time, well-worth-it PHEV experience.
After an hour or so of interacting and with the “Spirit” plugged in, Dave, Stephen, Jeremy, Cheryl, Paul, Natalie, and EVJerr got into Stephen's two EVs (a Solectria and an RAV EV4) and headed over to Magnolia Grill for supper. On behalf of the EVCoS, Dave and Stephen graciously treated EVJerry to dinner while the "Spirit" sipped amps.
After supper and the departure of all but Dave, it was an opportune time for Dave to futher bond with the “Spirit.” And he did a short CANViewfamiliarization run!
In the short run from Marietta to the Atlanta Hostel for an overnight stay, the “Spirit” got these blue bar readings: 98MPG, 100MPG, 75MPG, 100MPG, 100MPG … after charging up for some two hours. Sunday’s second run tally was 52.3MPG for 143 miles. The overall distance traveled was 342.8 miles. A most pleasant, Heather Harper, signed EVJerry “in” at the hostel. But, unfortunately, the “Spirit of DC” was unable to secure a sip of electricity and remained parked on a side street with the promise of TLC + E for tomorrow.
EVer,
Miss "Spirit of DC" and EVJerry (202) 486-5450
PHEV Day 34 - Saturday, 12 July 2008. Potentially, the "Spirit of EVI" of EAA'rs Fran, Ron & Joy Continues With Bonding with the "Spirit"
Cheers PHEV3A'rs, EVADC'rs and EVnthusiasts, One & All -
EAA’rs Fran, Ron & Joy Sullivan-Fahs in Tallahassee, FL began bonding in the “Spirit of DC” upon arrival and definitely en route to/from Swamp Stomp on Saturday afternoon, as the “Spirit” all charged up and reading .06 amps and 292 volts on the charger plus an well rested EVJerry after a most luxurious and delightful stayover at the Sullivans-Fahs. Fran was first into hypermiling with the “Spirit“ as we first headed out to the State Capital en route to the 30th Annual Swamp Stomp at the Tallahassee Museum (really a nature zoo of Florida plus history on an actual site used for farming years ago. Ron, Joy and EVJerr were the “Ride Alongs.”
We took in the State Capital with Ron as the guide (he worked just blocks away!).
Happy snaps abounded with pixs of the “Spirit” and the Gang of Four ... with the Florida State Capital as the backdrop. We even did pixs with life size statues of Porpoises, too! Watch for Pixs … especially since Fran and Ron, maybe even Joy will also be blogging in their report.
Upon arriving at the “Swamp Stomp,” Ron spotted the WCTV6 Crew of Reporter Shari Loftley (Shari.Loftley@WCTV.TV) and Cameraman, Jermine Fletcher. Fran immediately informed the two that here was the first Ever plug-in hybrid electric vehicle visiting Tallahassee -- it was worthy of an interview. In the meantime, EVJerry was locating the supervisor of the Tallahassee Museum in order to secure TM’s permission for a plug-in and a backdrop for videotaping the interview.
In brief, Shari and Jermine EVnthusiastically went straight to work -- filming the “Spirit” and taking an interview about Freedom of Choice between pouring gasoline in at $4, $5, $6 … a gallon, or plugging at pennies -- 60, 70, 80 cents for a gas gallon equivalent of electricity (GGE).
In meantime, Laura Cassels, the TM Public Relations Director watched over a short filming episode, which unfortunately got cut short … due in large measure to the threat of an immediate downpour.
However, for the last few sets of Stomp Swamp folk singing, we were Laurel’s guests who enjoyed the short interlude of songs: First was the MAWHAW -- a most enjoyable band with three gals (one on banjo, another on guitar, and one on drums) and one guy on the mandolin; the next set was one renown songbird, Linda “Let It Shine!” Hargrove (reportedly composing popular songs, some for George Jones); and the final set in wrapping up the Swamp Stomp was the popular, versatile, and quite “refrigerated air” entertaining Del Suggs with Chuck Parker accompanying on a few numbers. Definitely, we all wished for more! Maybe next year’s Swamp Stomp will see the return of the “Spirit” and EVJerry. It was that good and to be nature's outdoors in the green & clean of Florida.
In the hypermiling category with a full capacity cargo being carried, Fran did 52.5MPG for the first 10 miles with constant city traffic, and on the second run, Ron did 59.1MPG for 21 miles in returning home in the quiet of the night.
In wrap-up, t’was another serendipitous day! Even EVJerry got a happy snap with ‘BIG’ Gator … being held by TM Naturalist, Dave Perryman. And Fran and Ron definitely had a super PHEV EVducation with the “Spirit.” Watch for pix!
PHEV Day 33 - Friday, 11 July 2008. On to Tallahassee! Only 45 State Captials to Go! And Possibly 47Different EAA Chapter Members to Visti!
Cheers PHEV3A'rs, EVADC'rs, and EVnthusiastis, One & All -
[Note: Finally, I'm able to link up with free of charge WiFi at the Perk Up Cafe in Conyers, GA and posted to the webblog this report below[
The “Spirit of DC” got charged up at Zen Center Hostel in Gainesville, FL - Home of the U of FL "Gators" ... I think! First and only real run on Hwy 441 and Hwy 27 to Tallahassee showed:
60.7MPG for 26 miles; 59.3 for 60; 58.9 for 98 and 57.4 for 146 … and en route three blue bars of 5-minute 100MPG were attained.
The “Spirit” got EVJerry at a arrival at the home of Ron, Fran and Joy Sullivan-Fahs in Tallahasse, FL, thanks to a computer GPS,donated graciously by Mike Clark MichaelJayClark@gmail.c0m from the soon-to-be Sun Coast EVA. Understand that Fran, Ron & Joy are determined to put into effect the "EV Initiative" with a PHEV all around Florida ... just waiting on the A123 Battery System PHEV kit. (See Al Lococo's http://www.evprogress.org/ for that EVI announcement or email Fran at

PHEV Day 31 - Wednesday, 8 July 2008. MacDill AFB Stayover and an EVening of Breaking Tortilla Chips with Mike, George, and Jim.
Cheers PHEV3A’rs, EVADC’rs and EVnthusiasts, One & All -
Upon awakening from stayover at MacDill AF Base, and plugging in the “Spirit of DC,” EVJerry here proceeded to think that Wednesday’s target was Gainesville, FL. Idea was to visit with Tobie, the manager at Zen Center Hostel and make that the base camp for the “Spirit” in hopes of letting her demo to one current EAA Member and two 2006 EAA’rs in the Gainesville area.
After catching up on email, the “Spirit” took EVJerry to the Dental Clinic at MacDill AFB for a chipped molar. After a bit of a wait, good fortune had the retired Sergeant Major in the hands of Dr (Major) Clayton L. Ricks, USAF DMD Clayton.Rick.02@March.AF.mil and Senior Airman Valerie Morales Butterfly71444@yahoo.com for a temporary restoration of the chipped molar in short order. Per usual, Evnthusiastic EVJerry just could not keep from talking about the “Spirit” and she got a hold on the Doc! Dr Ricks was EVer to view this PHEV. It was a warm fuzzy to share back.
Next, on the way to Gainesville, which didn’t happen on Wednesday, was a visit to Gram’s Place - a most unique hostel created by the late Mark Holland in order to honor a much noted musician of his time, Phil Gram, who unfortunate died at age 26. Mark's brothers, Bruce and TJ Holland, carry on having the hostel to be enjoyed by American and foreign visitors coming to Tampa. Bruce BHPD@TampaBay.rr.com got a few happy snaps, which should be forthcoming to post. Special Note: Over the doorway to Gram’s Place reads this saying: MITAKAYE OYASIN meaning “All My Relations.”
Next it was off to do dinner with Mike Clark, George Keramas, and Jim Parish … to talk PHEVs, EVs and … setting up what may be the newest EAA Chapter -- Sun Coast EVA (SunEVA). And with the time being so late -- that is 10:30PM, Gainesville was put off til Thursday. Mike got to bond with the “Spirit” as she took him to his Mom’s place where the PHEV3A Duo settled in for a restful evening -- one slumbering, the other charging up!
The day’s tally was a bit rough in terms of Hypermiling, particularly in view of the “joys” experienced with the Tampa traffic at rush hour! The tally showed on the first run out of MacDill AFB: 53.0MPG for 9 miles; 55.9 for 11, 50.9 for 12. Two blue bar of 5-minute 100MPG were hit, however. The next run to Tampa Tribune in Clearwater on Hwy 60 had simply 63.7MPG for 23 miles. The final run to Holiday at normal traffic speeds around 46MPH had: 40.4MPG for 4 miles; 52.2 for 9; and wrapped up with Mike driving at 52.1MPG for 20 miles.
Special Note: It’s worth repeating that in the “Norm, CANView, and Jim” Story of Tuesday with the faulty CANView screen turning opaque that Jim Parish JRP@J-com.com masterfully handled the situation, thanks to being in touch with CANBus Circuit Designer, Norm Dick, and applying shared knowledge to reprogramming/upgrading the “Spirit.”
Jim underscored two points: First, that once someone is Re-programming, Do NOT PLUG-In the Relay Cable. And second, the relay cable from the battery pack to the CANBus should be one that uses a electro-magnetic protective covering against EM Interference from possible scrambling the programming of the CPU/Circuit Box. That wiring with a tin/aluminum sheafing with a steel wiring and multi-colored bunch of smaller wire is:
ALPAHA WIRE . H E . 116540 P/M 1219 C (UL) 75 * [degree[ C . TYPE CM SHIELDED 9C 24 or AWM 2574 LL 491
Cost for the recommended protective EMI measure would be $10 - $20 for about 10’ of wire.
Jim also mentioned that the little circular arrow button symbol on the bottom of the CanView screen next to the PHEV button is call the “Page Button.”

Jim Parish Blogging In About "Spirit of DC" Visit to Tarpon Springs, FL This Tuesday, 8 July 2008
Spirit of DC PHEV visit to Tarpon Springs!
The “Spirit of DC” was here and she brought one Jerry “EVJerr” Asher by for a quick CAN-View repair and fill-up with Electric Juice provided by abundant Florida Sunshine. She had a dead, blank stare, Miss Spirit’s CAN-View V3plus was asleep.
My first diagnoses was correct, somehow the Microprocessors FLASH memory had been corrupted. Having the proper tools here in Tarpon Springs to “re-flash” the MPU’s I told Jerry no problem, well, I thought none.
I downloaded the new firmware codes from the CAN-View site and re-programmed all the MPU’s but she didn’t come back alive. A quick email to Norm D’, the designer of the famous CAN-View PHEV computer system received a quick response and the means to get the system back working.
If Norm had not been generous with sharing information on the internal workings of his CAN-View project with me last year EVJerr might have well ended his quest only after a brief 30 days!
Visit http://www.spiritofdc.com/ to keep track of EVJerr and his journey across America (and now Canada to visit and personally thank Norm!)
I had contacted BayNews9 the evening before about a great news story on “Florida’s Energy Future” utilizing Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles and Solar Power. I was told when I called this morning to ask if they were going to come out I was told no.
Apparently “Powering Florida’s Future with Electric Cars & Solar Power is not Newsworthy”. Tell them how YOU feel, they thrive on viewer feedback.

PHEV Day 30 - Tuesday, 8 July 2008. The "Norm, CANView & Jim" Day With Return Of The CANView !!! Yahoo! Yahoo! Yahoo!
Cheers PHEV3A'rs, EVADC'rs, and EVnthusiasts, One & All -
The "Spirit of DC" had a comfortable night ... for the most part without charging, since she didn't use the auxillary battery pack on Monday. EVJerr slept til almost 9:00AM.
In doing a first run of the day in getting over to Jim Parish for final check-up & -out, the Prius went 50.6MPG for 15.2 miles. She filled up at a Sunoco Station - 8.266 gallons @ $3.94 = $32.64 at the mileage mark of 73,440. The reading was 49.1MPG for 227.1 miles.
Once at Jim's, he bleamed that the fix was "in" ... with fingers crossed! He thought, as he was putting the CANView back in, that the problem may have been caused by an EMI (electromagnetic wave interference). AND the CANView with screen jumped back to life in living colours. So SUPER!
Then, it was then simply a re-programming EVfort for Jim ... yet, an immense 101 Course in CANView for EVJerr. Key point: Once into re-programming the CANView with the admonition: DO NOT PLUG In the Relay Cable! things were reset:
Battery Temp to <110-degrees
Throttle <70 %
Battery > 185 volts
SOC 50%
Speed <33MPG
Charge > 50 Acl (amps current limited)
SOC +55 65%
ICE " 65-degree F
EVen, EVJerr wrote down the Password 1234 for the CANView when reprogramming.
Well, Jim Parish turned out to be the HERO, and definitely entitled to be the "Spirit of DC" patron Saint! Jim's probably one out of two people who qualifies as a CANView Technician. The "Spirit of DC" definitely has Norm Dick in mind when winging it thru Canada.
Before making a run to Tampa, let me note: Take a moment and click on Jim Parish's webblog: www.WizBandit.WordPress.com ... even drop Jim an email JRP@J-com.net. Robb at PluginSupply.com wants Jim on-board as an installer.
EVer,
Miss "Spirit" and EVJerry ... back on the PHEV Road, THANKS to Jim Parish. Yahoo, Yahoo, Yahoo! And as Joe Lado, PHEV3A Co-Chair would say: It's all part of the PHEVxperience!
PHEV Day 29 - Monday, 7 July 2008 ... Near Gloom Day! No CANView! Only Prius OEM Screens of Consumption & Energy Monitor Operating ... Yet, ... !!!
Cheers PHEV3A'rs, EVADC'rs, EVnthusiasts, One & All,
From the late morning departure from Mike & Penny's Mom's Home Sweet Home, the "Spirit of DC" with a full charge rolled out of the driveway happily enough to be heading for George Keramas' Black Bay Technologies in Tarpon Springs GKeramas@alum.MIT.edu for a visit. However, the CANView would not function; the screen would turn opague. GADS! We're "blind" as far as using electricity goes! Now what? was the forthcoming question.
At George's facility with the "Spirit" showing her signage, her set of batteries, ... to George and his mechanic Scott, ... plus apologizing for lack of a CANView demo, it dawned on EVJerr to call Jim Parish, who just seems to be "Jack Master of All Trades." EVer so fortunately, Jim and his wife Linda were within minutes of Black Bay Technologies and came over. After a few quick checks, Jim said we could bring it out to his place where he had just about all the components of the CANView CPU and so on. He definitely had lived up to his WizBandit label with his Weblog www.WizBandit.WordPress.com. So the five of us did lunch!
Afterways, Jim and I drove to his homestead with three pivotable solar panels, geese and chickens, and cats. And Linda drove their son's 2008 Prius PHEV. Once there, Jim went into operations, ruling out various things first -- there's was power, so it's something else ... checking out the circuit boards, and on and on ... but without success! Some moments were spent in consulting with Mike Harvey and then, Robb Protheroe. More moments were spent ... til let's say an afternoon thunderstorm and a dinner date with Fran Sullivan-Fahs, her husband Ron and Bob MacDonald allowed for an interlude.
Plan was for Jim to contact the circuit board designer, Norm Dick, and see if he could come up with a fix. EVJerry would take the "Spirit" up to rendez vous with more Florida EAA Members from Tallahassee and Lady Lake, FL.
In thunderstormy weather with intermittent rains, the "Spirit" took off from Tarpon Springs and eventually got onto I-75 and then US 301 for the link-up ... only an hour or so later than anticipated. Yet, all was well; the gang joyously was there and awaiting the "Spirit"-- ElectricCarsNow@comcast.net Fran & Ron along with daughter, Joy, and Bob with his neat looking red e-Ford Ranger truck. Everyone was EVnthusiastic. The "Spirit" was EVer delighted, too! Later, Bob's hydrogen-enthused friend, Brett, joined us for fine dining at Sonny's BBQ ... with vegetarian EVJerry simply being treated to the enjoyment of a fine salad bar. NOTE: Fran and Ron have been waiting and waiting and waiting to get a call to go to Raleigh, NC for their A123 Battery System PHEV kit installations. They too wanted to a PHEV trip; theirs will be something like PHEV All Around Florida for some 2,000 miles to demo batteries are here, the PHEV/EV technologies are here, and let's not wait, but get cracking on making America energy independent with electricity and more!
The "Spirit of DC" even joined Bob after supper and lots of visiting - especially the PHEV trips, setting up a North Florida EVA Chapter as well as a West Coast EVA, charging stations, PluginSupply.com; Jim Price's endeavors with his own PHEV and what's there for others, etc. ... .
The "Spirit" along EVJerry and the e-Ford Ranger along with Bob, went to visit with Reverend Mike's congregation ... and show their stuff at the green grassroots level. And they did!
In driving back to Holiday, FL for another night stayover at Mike Clark's Mom's place, the "Spirit" on the not-so-blue-highway-called Interstate 75 did a respectable 49.5MPG for 224.2 miles. EVJerr did one webblog and it was off to Beddy-bye Land.

PHEV Day 28 - Sunday, 6 July 2008. Meeting Up With Lots of Florida EAA'rs ... First in Winter Haven and Wrap-Up in Holiday, FL
Cheers PHEV3A'rs, EVADC'rs, and EVnthusisasts, One & All -
Leaving the Palms Lake Front Hostel with the "Spirit of DC" all charged up, thanks to the courtesy of Aaron, the hostel manager ... with "Ciao, Ciao" to staff members -- Mr. Jerry, Elizabeth, Gloria, Sunday afternoon beckoned us to Winter Haven for a rendez vous with Al and Diane Lococo. And with a hypermiler run as well on Hwy 192 and Hwy 27 ... and then, Hwy 17 into Winter Haven.
The 1st Run showed these figures: 99.9MPG for 17 plus miles; 94.8 for 20; 87.4 for 26, 81.8 for 30; 79.1 for 32; 80.1 for 33; 77.2 for 36; 78.3 for 42; 77.1 for 43; 79.4 for 46; and77.3MPG for 48 miles. The best reading of the Energy Monitor blue bar screen revealed: 85MPG for the first 5 minutes, 100MPG for next, ... then 100, 100, 100 and then dumped! -- 75MPG for the last five-minute bar, which ruined the effects of a blue'd out screen. After another 75MPG and a 99MPG, there were two more max'ed out blue bars - 101MPG so declared!
At 2:30PM on Sunday, Al and Diane Lococo warmly greeted the "Spirit of DC" and EVJerry. Miss "Spirit" got to recharge and visit with EPT2 -- Al's amazingly eye pleasing Electric Pickup Truck No. 2. Later on, EPT2 took us for a ride around the area. Also, neighbors Dave Park and Carl Lemieux came out and admired the "Spirit" as well, especially the lifts in operation for raising up battery pack. Al definitely thought this PHEV is important!
Sidenote: Should anyone be desireous of retrofitting a Ford Ranger into an EV, it'd be EVer so worthwhile to peruse this retired computer programmer's website -- Al has thoroughly and superbly documented "how to do an EV truck" manual with colored pixs regarding his second truck conversion. See www.EVProgress.org
While the "Spirit" was sucking in the amps, Diane supplied EVJerry with kindness and hospitality galore -- watering the heated lad, feeding the boy, and generally treating the kid here to a Mom's most welcome care. Al and Diane even offered a room to stay over, then or upon return in the future (which could be in late September or early October).
Bidding Al & Diane "Adieu, Adios & Aloha2," the "Spirit" took up a 2nd Run with 21/2 hours worth of charging . The anticipated results showed: 99.3MPG for 18 miles, the 97.5 for 20; 89.4 for 24; 76.7 for 34; 70.5 for 45 for 62.6 for 60, and 57.9MPG for 103 miles in arriving at Holiday, FL. Blue bar tally read: 70MPG for first five minutes; 100 for next five minutes; 100, 100, and then, the last! ... bummer at 50MPG, another 50 and lastly, 75MPG for the last five minutes.
Overall with mixed weather of beaming sunshine and pouring down rainsi n driving from Winter Haven to Holiday, FL, the tally had 57.9MPG at 103 miles. Mike and Penny Clark, Cornelius Crohin and Jim Parish formed up a "Grand Welcoming Committee" for the "Spirit." Even lodging for EVJerry and all the E-Juice.
More to follow.

Prius hybrid to get rooftop solar panel
I saw this today on The Register: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/07/07/prius_solar_panel/
Narrator: So after reading the article I decided to add my two cents about pluggable hybrids with the thought that I might draw some world attention to the Miss Spirit of DC all across America and some traffic to the website. So I begin:

Whereas over here in Blighty we've got the Battery Vehicle society who, rather than taking godawful, high-cockometer-rated, clunky designs, and modding them up to very slightly above diesels that are commonly available over here, build electric cars. Doing things properly, y'know?
And not only that, they help each other and talk to each other and foster a community spirit as opposed to scrounging around to pay for someones' roadtrip across America. I mean surely the greenest thing would be to NOT drive across America!?
Even our Kit-Car industry's got in on the act- at Stoneleigh this year on the Mills Extreme Vehicles stand was an MEV R2 fitted with LiFeBatt's LiFePO4 batteries, some control stuff and a NetGain Warp9 motor. 330BHP equivalent, topped out over 100mph, decent accelleration, about £17k (of which 10k was the batteries... you could build it a lot cheaper- though with less range- if you used SLAs) and fantastic accelleration. Only problem was the range of 35 miles- which is still perfectly suitable for driving about town and my commute. And given that a Prius should only be used around town or it's just a heavy, inefficient petrol car, and that they normally carry one person (or it'd overheat from the intense feeling of self satisfaction), it's vastly superior to them. Oh, and no nickel. Lithium, Iron and Phosphates- all, IIRC, available from and sourced from the UK. And they last longer than the Prius.
So to conclude, the UK's doing things properly. You're creating large, heavy vehicles and still cheating by keeping the petrol engine...
flame on.

This means that we are actually on the same page as I am a member of the Electric Vehicle Association of Greater Washington DC. Here is the link: http://www.evadc.org/
I am currently working out the details to convert my 1997 VW Passat GLX VR6 to an all electric. Also I see hybrids as an evolutionary step toward all electric vehicles. Not as an end to itself.
As for the Pluggable I participated in the ride along and although we were carrying 3 large humans and other gear we still averaged 69 miles to the gallon and made our journey of 220 miles using only 3.5 gal (13.25 liters). Sidebar yes most people in the US commute alone, don't single out the Prius drivers.

July 4th Weekend
Amtrak auto-train with a sleeper car was a very interesting experience, meeting all sorts of people.
In Central Florida I did some hypermiling and got 5 consecutive 5 minute intervals of ~99.9MPG, the goal was 30 minutes of it and I only managed 25 minutes. The last 5 minutes I made 80+MPG but nothing to brag about.
We took a stop at Larry's place where we shared all sorts of things about electric vehicles and energy saving alternatives. He was accompanied with his friend Carolann, who was very cool. They were very hospitable on their day off.
Getting lost in Central Florida can be frustrating, but Google Maps on my mobile phone came in handy yet again to get us to our destination.
PHEV Day 27 - Saturday, 5th of July ... Still Celebrating! And At "Another Consider The Alternatives" - Lodging at Palm Lake Front Hostel
Cheers PHEV3A'rs, EVADC'rs, EVnthusiasts, One & All,
After the "Spirit of DC" and EVJerry bidded Eric "Smooth Sailing" aboard his Delta flight back to BWI around 10:30AM, the traveling duo looked for an opportunity to do 101 MPG hypermiling, since 'someone' still had a full charge in her battery pack.
Once, the "Spirit" refueled up with 8.464 gallons at $3.96 for a #39.59 charge at a reading of 73,009 Miles and recording the yesterday/this morn Stats of 63.5MPG for the last 93 miles, we started hypermiling back to Larry's place. The first bar read 95MPG for the first five minutes and then came six blue bars in session with a declared 101MPG for 20 miles. That was followed by these figures afterwards: 98.2MPG for 46 miles; 93.0 for 50; 91.0 for 51.9 miles. The final Stats read: 63.5MPG for 93 miles.
After a quick visit with Larry, the "Spirit" was off to hide out at the Palms Lakefront Resort & Hostel in Kissimmee, Florida. This would be the first time at a hostel for the "Spirit." It was a definite "Consider the Alternatives" ... even when it comes to lodging. All the youthful travelers, especially foreign backpackers from China, Germany, Ireland, and so on, deserved looking the "Spirit of DC" over, no less!
This afternoon's projected to be over at Florida EAA'r Al Lococo in Winter Haven. Do check out Al's website: http://www.evprogress.org/ and you'll see EV-wise just whom Miss "Spirit" will be bonding with. Afterwards, it's over to Mike Clark's Home in Holiday, FL, where a number of FLEAA'rs such Cornelius and Julie Crohin join in and welcome the "Spirit" to the West Coast!
EVer at the moment,
Miss "Spirit" and EVJerry back on the Blue Highways 17/92 hypermiling over to Winter Haven
PHEV Day 26 - Friday, 4th of July 2008. Arriving on the Amtrak Auto Train in Sanford, FL. Crashing at Larry's in Orlando, FL
Cheers PHEV3A'rs, EVADC'rs and EVnthusiasts -
Eric Lamison, Amtrak & "Spirit of DC" Ride Along, captured on video /digital the "Spirit of DC" rolling off the Amtrak Auto Train in Sanford, Florida, while EVJerry had baggage duty. Watch for Eric's posting of pixs on arriving at the Amtrak Auto Train in Sanford, FL.
It was about 10:30AM on the 4th of July and after a most enjoyable night riding the rails, while considering the Efficiency Alternatives to auto travel such as rail shipping. The "Spirit of DC" soon had us off in the PHEV EVMode for a Blue Highway on FL 17/92 run to Larry Wexlar's Orlando Home, where the official progressive XPrize contender -- his Solar Electric Car awaited to meet "Spirit." If you'r game to assist, even to sponsor this XPrize contender, do email Larry at: W@XLR8Sun.com. Note: Larry also has a solar trailer as well.
"Spirit" probably did well over 8.5 electric miles in the PHEV EVMode showing on its CANView (Controller Area Network View) screen. Her longest pure electric run was 4.2 miles. Alternating ever so quickly with its original Prius screen showing MPG Consumption, the "Spirit" helping hands nearly got a completely blue screen, showing 99.9MPG on three blue bars but Alas! the next readings were 80, 85, and 90MPG for the range of 20 miles. Then, the auxillary lead acid battery pack, being fairly well drained, wasn't able to replenish the electricity to the nickel metal OEM pack (original equipment manufacturer) for the readings fell off follows:
99.3MPG for 22 miles; 99.1 for 23; 86.8 for 24; 85 for 30; 71.1MPG for 41 miles.
Larry put out a FLEAA list serv message that the "Spirit of DC" was in town to meet up with Florida EAA Members and flashed her signage as well as show off her stuff. That message most serendipitiously got Al Lococo from Winter Haven, Cornelius Crohin from Tampa, and Fran Sullivan-Fahs from Tallahassee EVnthusiasticallly calling in to meet the "Spirit." That was super, because it's all being scheduled to happen!
So, on a cool summer 4th of July day, we were warmly greeted by Larry and his friend, Carolann Jungers. While Eric and EVJerry enjoyed the usual 4th of July picnic fare with an ever so attentive and hospitable Larry and Carolann, Miss "Spirit" happily soaked up the electricity. The idea for Eric to have a hypermiler run in the early evening of fireworks at Disney World at the Armed Forces "Shades of Green" Lodge, where interesting enough Carolann worked.
More to follow with pixs from Eric's viewpoint from crashing overnight at Larry's.

PHEV Day 25 - Thursday, 3 July 2008. It's Amtrak Day. "Spirit of DC" Is All Charged Up And Anxiously Awaiting!
Cheers PHEV3A'rs, EVADC'rs and EVnthusiasts,
It's 9:15AM, Thursday, 3 July 2008, and the "Spirit of DC" is all charged up and anxiously awaiting! It's Amtrak Day. The "Spirit" gets to literally cruise along the rails from Lorton, VA to Sanford, FL. It was a "Consider the Alternatives" option that Amtrak Marketing thought well of it and invited both the "Spirit of DC" and two "Ride Alongs" to participate ... afterall, Amtrak has a few 7,000HP hybrids called diesel-electric locomotives. And it'd be good for the "Spirit" to bond with at least one of them.
More to follow, of course. Especially since Spirit of DC Webmaster, Eric Lamison-White will be a "Ride Along" with EVJerry on this one-way to Florida EVent. So expect postings of pixs to follow. Also, Michael White will also be his usual Photog self when dropping his son off.
Anxiously A'waiting ... EVer til later,
Miss "Spirit of DC" and EVJerry ...

PHEV Day 24 - Wednesday, 2 July 2008 - A Rather LONG Venture Back To Harvey Coachworks In Maryland
Cheers PHEV3A'rs, EVADC'rs & EVnthusiasts, One & All,
On Wednesday around 9:00AM with a cool and comfy 75-degree morn, the "Spirit of DC" was fully charged up with reading of 282 volts and 0.22 amps. "Spirit of DC" brought EVJerry to a really neat and quite grassroots Community Radio Coop (919) 929-9601 where Sustainable Jack (Jack Martin, Triad EVA President) and Solar Jim (Chris Carter) do the "Home Power Hour" at 10:00AM, each Wednesday in Carrboro, NC, which is just next to the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill.
We opted to hypermile over to Community Radio Coop FM 103.5 LP (low power) with results as follows: four Blue Bars for 20 minutes worth of 101 MPG for 11 miles! Then, ALAS! a .6 five-minute segment popped up!
Solar Jim showed up after a bit of a wait, recognized and greeted us. Back in March, EVJerry was on the show to talk up the PHEV All Around America. But today, the "Home Power Hour" had already been taped and was playing, because Sustainable Jack was probably at a Solar Fest in Cedar, Iowa. Nevertheless, Solar Jim got to see the "Spirit's" graphics, the battery box and the set-up with the CANView/CANPlus. He even listened to the "Freedom of Choice" -- that is one can freely choose between pouring in $4, $5, $6 ... worth of OPEC molecules, or pouring in clean and green, sustainable and homegrown All American electrons. Solar Jim also got a stack of EV-related "how to do electric mowers, tractor, bikes" literature for future use. Such handouts were courtesy of TEAA VP Don "DC" Crohan. Also, a few photos were taken, too!
SPECIAL NOTE: If you wish to listen to the live-in-person interview that WCOM 103.5 FM LP personalities, Sustainable Jack and Solar Jim, had with EVJerry about the PHEV All Around America then go to www.CommunityRadio.Coop and click on "Podcasts" and select "Shows" on ibiblio setting and scroll to "30 March 2008 Spirit of DC" Any feedback, please call in to Home Power Hour at (919) 929-9601.
Next major event was the long, long ride to Harvey Coachworks on the Blue Highways of NC, VA and even MD! Recording the 1st run showed: 59.0MPG for 31 miles; 55.5 for 50; 56.7 for 63; 55.6MPG for 109 miles. Tally was 55.6MPG for 124.3 miles.
We filled up at a PURE Station on Hwy 15 with 89 Octane, priced the same as regular -- 6.75 gallons at $3.99 = $27.06 with Mileage recorded at 72,522.
The next run was 52.6MPG for 242.6 miles, culminating in the arrival at Harvey Coachworks, where "Doc" Mike did further work on the "Spirit of DC" and coached EVJerr on the finer points of reading the CANView.
Around 11:30PM, the "Spirit" and EVJerr got situated at Takoma Village Cohousing once again and with the benefit of electricity. Both were dreaming of the Amtrak Auto Train.
EVer,
Miss "Spirit of DC" and EVJerry

A man driving across the country in his part electric hybrid car made a stop in Wilmington to spread the word about plugging in rather than filling up.
Cheers PHEV3A'rs, EVADC'rs, and EVnthusiasts, One & All,
Ashley Tucker from WWAY returned the call to let us know that Miss "Spirit of DC" made it last night on the 11:00PM News -- her first EVer television appearance after all. Do see her first EVer news story on TV at http://www.wwaytv3.com/electric_car_craze/07/2008.
We filled up on 89 Octane MidGrade at the BX on Seymour Johnson AFB, as that was what was available: 2,882 gallons at $4.09 = $11.81 with Mileage registering at 72,307. Significant reading in returning back to Alice's Place in Durham were: at 47MPH -53.1MPG for for first 25 miles; 57MPH for short term on I95 showed 53.4PMG forup to 44.6 miles at that time and at 56MPH55.7MPG for 66miles for overall tally.
Both of us were feeling pretty excited and opted to go to visit with Triad EVA'r regulars from the "Power of DC" -- TEVA President Jack Martin and VP Ken Clayton. We found Jack ... gone! He probably was at a Solar Fest in Cedar, Iowa. Ken, being in Winston-Salem, had a wonderful offer of hospitality, but Alas, it was just a bit too far, if tomorrow's plan was to take in the radio program "Home Power Hour" in Carrboro, NC (next to Chapel Hill) on Wednesday morn and make it to Harvey Coachworks in Maryland ... and prep for the Amtrak Auto Train on Thursday with Ride Along, PHEV3A Webmaster, Eric Lamison-White. Once again, the "Spirit" and EVJerr opted to stay over at Alice, Mom, & Jamie's Place in Durham, NC, so that "Spirit" also would enjoy a full 6 hours worth of charging, too.

PHEV Day 23. Monday, 30 June 2008. Miss "Spirit of DC" Becomes A TV Personality -- WWAY, Channel 3 ABC Videotaping
Cheers PHEV3A'rs, EVADC'rs, and EVnthusiasts, One & All -
After six hours of charging at The Howard Estate Retreat (and both "Spirit of DC" and EVJerry just wanted to hang out!) , it was on and back to Wilmington to "do lunch" with Coastal Carolina/Wilmington EVA VP Bouty Baldridge. Before clearing out the figures, the reading was 57MPG for 140 miles from Fayetteville to Southport, NC.
It was delightful to visit with Bouty, who also happens to be one of the first PluginAmerica.com / Don't Crush Gang Members. Probably most definitely, he's the first EVer in Carolinah and he proundly has his PIA T-shirt on for the Sunday rendez vous. It was also a "free lunch" as well.
Hospitality in Wilmington was wonderful, especially with the Patersons' offer of lodging and comfort as well as the Howards in providing not only a place to sleep, something to eat and a movie with popcorn, there was xeroxing and other administrative support and equipment assists. The "Spirit" can't wait to return to Wilmington, especially after about leaving town.
On the way out of Wilmington, Miss "Spirit" saw the WWAY 3 NewsChannel ABC Station and just pulled in. After a few minutes of "Hello'ing," Receptionist Brea Fisher got the Assignment Editor, Ashley Talley, who came outside and met the "Spirit of DC." And in turn, Ashley had Megan Packer take on videotaping the gorgeous Miss "Spirit" in all her splendid patriotic graphics along with interviewing "pretty face" EVJerry about what's a plug-in all about?/! With the ring of "Freedom of Choice" between pouring in OPEC molecules at $4, $5, $6 a gallon versus plugging homegrown American electrons at 60, 70, 80 cents per GGE (gas gallon equivalent)
and with Miss "Spirit of DC" backing him up, EVJerry became EVnthusiastic about the Future become green & clean, sustainable & electric ... ultimately with America being energy independent with electricity. ... Hopefully, Miss "Spirit" became a television star on the 11:00 O'clock News on WWAY on Monday night.
After 40-minutes of videotaping and interviewing, Megan caught the "Spirit" quietly and electrically rolling away on her PHEV EVMode. After a first run of 62.8MPG for 101.8 miles, Miss "Spirit" picked up the pace due to the evening twilight and headed for Seymour Johnson AFB for the comfort of a reasonable $32 stay overnight with WiFi access. But Alas! Done so again without benefit of charging!
EVer, and a'Rushing this Tuesday morning while blogging in -- Jerome at Amtrak just called to stay "We're on track for the Auto Train" on Thursday 3rd of July, and looking to be en route to TEVA Land! That's Triad EVA folks

PHEV Day 22, Sunday, 29 June 2008. Rolling Towards Linking Up With Coastal Carolinas/Wilmington EVA'rs - A Day of Amazing Serendipity!.
Cheers PHEV3A'rs, EVADC'rs, and EVthusiasts, One & All,
On Sunday, after a night's rest without benefit of charging up, Miss "Spirit of DC" and EVJerr checked in the Yellow Pages, saw Bleeker's EV Auto Store, and tried the phone number, which turned out to be out-of-service. Our search to find the location proved fruitless.
The current reading was 56.7MPG for 114 miles. After a fill-up of 1.857 gallon at $2.97 for $7.30 worth of gas with the mileage reading at 72,005, Miss "Spirit of DC" had EVJerry en route and bound for Wilmington on the historic Blue Highway called "Moore's Creek National Battlefield Highway," otherwise known as NC 211.
Temperature was 93-degree. Cruising was nearly all alone with calm and tranquil country side of tobacco, soybean, corn fields abounding along with the pines or other woodlands. It was truly a Sunday Drive in the Carolinah Country. Even with a few raindrops at the very end.
"Spirit" did various experimental runs with cruise control:
1st at 36MPH averaging 65.6MPG for 35 miles until seemingly the first stop sign after I95 at NC242 with Moore's Creek NPS some 45 miles away
2nd at 37MPH averaging 66.1MPG at 40 mile mark and 2nd stop sign
3nd at 37MPH averaging 66.8MPG at the 54 mile mark and 3rd stop sign
4th at 33MPH averaging 67.7MPG at the 66 mile mark and 4th stop sign
5th at 39MPH averaging 66.6MPG at the 77 mile mark.
Eventually, coming to the Moore's Creek National Battlefield and stopping for a re-charge and visit, reading 41MPH averaging 66.6MPG at the 85 mile mark.
Miss "Spirit of DC" greeted the NPS Range Staff on duty: Rangers Angela Bates and Tim Boyd along with 82-young VIP "Birthday Girl," Jean Bauer. Note: for the National Park Service, a VIP is a volunteer in the park. Tim gladly allowed Miss "Spirit" a 40-minute sip of electricity while EVJerr visited and did the "secret handshake" between Army Retires, enjoyed some of Jean's birthday cake, and even re-visited the history of why Moore's Creek was so important in the Revolutionary War and its importance for North Carolina.
After leaving, the "Spirit" galloped into Wilmington for at 55MPG for a date with Coastal Carolina/Wilmington EVA'rs -- CCWEVA President Page Paterson along with her husband, Charles, CCWEVA VP "Bouty" Baldridge, and QC Rick Howard, who originally chartered the first Coastal Carolinas EVA (CCEVA). We broke bread at the Water Street Restaurant, while raindrops fell. Miss "Spirit" had some photo opportunities with the CCWEVA'rs, and even met her counterpart, Bouty's Solectria EV, which I'll call for now "Bucket of Volts" til corrected.
ANT Jayne had the ANT label for Alternative Neighbor Transportation when Jayne and Rick ran the first EVer Electric Vehicle Store in Carolinah as well as her love of kids, especially when she directed the Junior Solar Sprints for the former EVChallenge. Jayne got to bond with the "Spirit" en route to Southport, where she'd be quartered for the first time inside of a garage and given all the E-juice she'd like. QC was the nomer I applied to Rick for his five or six tire changes done in the State of Arkansas while he and Jayne were en route to Colorado for the end results competition for their efforts with Students Fueling the Future ... see www.StudentsFuelingFuture.org>. QC Rick also quickly set the charger right for Miss "Spirit" to get a full night of comfortable charging. Watch for pixs to be posted.
EVer,
Miss "Spirit of DC" and EVJerry
