"Spirit of DC" - Back on Blue Hwy known as Pacific Coast Hwy 1 with Re-invigorated with B&B Battery Pac ... Thanks to PluginSupply's Robb Protheroe

Cheers PHEV3A'rs, EVADC'rs, and EVnthusiasts, One & All -

On Friday afternoon, 30 January 2009, the "Spirit of DC" was operationally in excellent order and happy to be back on the road, trucking from Petaluma via the Bodega Road to the US Coast Guard Training Center and onto Pacific Coast Highway 1 (PCH 1) on into San Francisco on Hwy 101. The PHEV Kit was checked and shown in good functionally operating order; the depleted battery pac was replaced and re-invigorated and balanced with a B&B EB20 battery pack. Even EVJerry got quite a PbA lead gel training course with lots of 'hands on' practical exercises included! Lots! All thanks to the time and EVfort, expertise and generosity graciously given Robb Protheroe of PluginSupply. As well as Robb's Sweetie, Paz. Do See www.PluginSupply for more details and background info.

At this hour and at the Ft Mason International Hostel (Fisherman's Wharf) in San Francisco, the "Spirit" is delightfully charged up! and prep'ing for tomorrow's EVent -- on Saturday at 11:00AM at the Chapel-Flagpole area on the Ft Mason National Historic Park, the "Spirit" will initiate its launch of the Sun Belt Grand Finale - the announced start of a 10-week, an estimated 10,000-mile run from San Francisco to Washington, DC via Florida. Back on the Capital Mall in time for the Earth Day Weekend with the EPA 5th National Sustainable Design Expo, EVADC as the lead sponsor of PHEV All Around America will proclaim the "Spirit" as truly the first All American PHEV for having been to all 48 State Capitals.

Besides re-visiting California and Arizona to see new EAA Sister Chapters, the Sun Belt Grand Finale will cover the eight remaining State Capitals for visits: Santa Fe, NM; Oklahoma City, OK; Austin, TX: Baton Rouge, LA; Jackson, MS; Little Rock, AR; Nashville, TN; and Montgomery, AL. The EVducation Tour back includes visiting with four EAA Sister Chapters in Texas and two in Tennessee.

More edited in details to follow with some stats.

On Trial Run, "Spirit of DC" Hit 99.9MPG on 21-Mile Trip from Petaluma to Sebastopol, California

Cheers PHEV3A'rs, EVADC'rs, and EVnthusiasts, One & All,
After some four workday sessions with Robb Protheroe of PluginSupply, the "Spirit" was ready to sally forth in the late afternoon on a run from Petaluma to Sebastopol, CA. The recording on this one way 21-Mile trip was max'ing out the 99.9MPG. However, the return trip for a total of 41 miles toto showed 74.3MPG. Conclusion: "Spirit" is back in operational shape, ready to sally forth onto San Francisco and all across America to Washington, DC.
More input to be forthcoming. Especially on the PbA battery schooling that EVJerry has been receiving on this EVducational Tour.

Upgrading to Happy Battery Pac on the "Spirit of DC" with Work Sessions with Robb Protheroe at PluginSupply, Monday - Wednesday, 26-28 January 2009

Cheers PHEV3A'rs, EVADC'rs, & EVnthusiasts, One & All -
The "Spirit of DC" arrived at Robb Protheroe's PluginSupply location on Sunday, 25 Jan 09 in order to upgrade the PbA battery pack, which was found quite depleted. Work sessions started Monday with EVJerry on an EVducational learning curve of his own with EVer so pragmatic instructions from Robb. Over the next few days of adjusting the upgraded B & B EV20 PbA pac, the "Spirit" got its best operations by Wednesday afternoon, 28 Jan 09 -- with a solid battery pac, the "Spirit" took three EVMode trial runs, which showed 9.9, 12.5, and 11.8 electric miles at approximately 22MPG on the average.
Tomorrow, with another two trial runs of at least 10 electric miles each, it seems quite certain that the "Spirit" could have well over 51 electric miles ... and with a gallon of gas, it'd hit the goal of the 101MPG assisted by electricity from tallying the 51 electric miles and 50 plus gas miles. We will see! It's all part of the PHEV EVxperience!
So the "Spirit" is just about ready to launch its Sun Belt Grand Finale from San Francisco, California - a run across America to Washington, DC, via an Amtrak Auto Train from Florida. In the Sun Belt run, the "Spirit" will be visiting the last eight reminding State Capitals: Santa Fe, New Mexico; Oklahoma City, OK; Austin, TX, Baton Rouge, LA; Jackson, MS; Little Rock, AR; Nashville, TN; and Montgomery, AL. Also, there are a number of EAA Sister Chapters to be visited -- San Francisco EVA, San Francisco Peninsula EAA; San Jose EAA, Central Coast EAA, Ventura Cty EAA, Flagstaff EAA, N.Texas EAA, Austin Area EAA, Alamo City EAA, Houston EAA, Knoxville EVA, Chattanooga EAA and Sun Coast EVA.

"Spirit of DC" on Work Run to Luscious Garage in San Francisco for Upgrading Battery Pack

Cheer PHEV3A'rs, EVADC'rs, & EVnthusiasts, One & All -

More details to be edited in about one depleted PbA battery pack and run to Luscious Garage in San Francisco for a new but used set B&B EB20 batteries to make up a new pack.

In experimental run, the "Spirit" under Robb Protheroe's guiding hand registered 5.5 electric miles with all B&B showing 12.60 volts or better, except one at the 9.69-volt mark, which was an immediately replaced.

More to be edited in. And maybe even a webblog from Carolyn , the Luscious Garage "Goddess" who may post a few pixs of the "Spirit" with Carolyn & EVJerry.

Electric car makes pit stop at Tioga High School Union Democrat - Sonora,CA,USA -->
Electric car makes pit stop at Tioga High School. Written by James Damschroder, The Union Democrat January 26, 2009 08:06 pm [with EVJerry's edits]:

To Jerry Asher, it’s not about how fast you get somewhere — it’s about how much gas you use on your way. Asher’s been touring the United States for nearly a year in his plug-in Toyota Prius hybrid [electric vehicle]. Friday, he and his car puttered down Ferretti Road in Groveland getting 255 miles per gallon [reading in the EVMode per one mile].

“That’s my baby,” Asher, of Arizona, said with a smile while petting the dashboard of the car he’s dubbed the “Spirit of DC.” He began his travels on Earth Day at the National Mall in Washington D.C., and, so far, has visited 44 [40] state capitals. Before he rolls back to the National Mall on April 18 this year, he plans to visit the last four [eight]in the continental United States.

His goal is to be as visible as possible and spread the word about hybrid technology that could help stop global warming. Friday, he spoke to Tioga High School students about the vehicle and why they need to become familiar with such “green” technology.

“This is your future,” Asher told them. “We can do this now. We don’t have to wait.” Plug-in hybrids use the same technology as current hybrids, but have a more powerful battery that can be recharged via a standard electrical outlet. Any 2004 or newer Toyota Prius can hook up to the battery, which costs about $5,000. When the larger battery is drained, the car reverts back to being a regular hybrid.

At Tioga, the car was plugged into a socket outside of the gym where Asher was speaking. “You represent middle America,” Asher said. “You’re the people who don’t get to see this stuff regularly and believe that it can be done.” Asher said that the electricity it takes to run his car is about a quarter to a sixth of the cost of gasoline.

Asher’s ultimate vision is an electric highway [computerized], where cars are hooked up to an electric source, like bumper cars. “You could just say, ‘take me to Los Angeles.’ And then you could sit back, drink some coffee and sleep,” Asher said.

After Asher was done speaking, the kids gathered around the car to get a look a closer look.
Michael Malloy, of Big Oak Flat, also spoke to the audience about how he makes and uses biodiesel to power his car. “I’m a local guy,” Malloy said. “You don’t have to be a special guy to do this.” Biodiesel can be made from ethanol or used cooking oil. Malloy said it’s a simple process anyone can do. “It’s just like making beer,” he said. Contact James Damschroder at

"Spirit" Is At PluginSupply ... in Preparation for Launching the Sun Belt Grand Finale from SF Bay Area to Washington, DC on Saturday, 31 Jan 09

Cheers PHEV'rs, EVADC'rs, and EVnthusiasts, One & All,

After a superb EVducational time in Groovyland, the "Spirit of DC" headed out on Sunday afternoon for Robb Protheroe and PluginSupply; She arrived in the early evening at Petaluma, California in order to get preparations underway for launching the Sun Belt Grand Finale from San Francisco Bay Area to Washington, DC, on Saturday, 31 January 2009. In addition to yet-to-be-visited EAA Sister Chapters in California and Arizona, the "Spirit's" final months will complete the last eight of 48 State Capitals: Santa Fe, NM; Oklahoma City, OK; Austin, TX; Baton Rouge, Louisana: Jackson, MS; Little Rock, AR; Nashville, TN; and Montgomery, AL.

The "Spirit" also got word from Kay Crow from Groveland, CA that there's front page story for Monday, 26 January 2009, in the UNION DEMOCRAT about "Going Green" at Tioga High School on Friday. So stand by ... for weblink and more!

This afternoon, Robb oversaw the battery health check-up on the "Spirit." Diagnosis showed that about half of the Spirit's batteries were in need of replacement; they were not registering in a normal working voltage mode between 11.50 to 12.50 volts. So on Tuesday, 27th of January, the hope is to replace the Universal set of batteries and "freshen" up the battery pack with a new but used set of batteries from PluginSupply.

Accessing Pixs of the "Spirit of DC" and LOTS of Other Plug-ins from the Inaugural Parade West: Plug In, America! in Santa Monica, 17 Jan 2009

Cheers PHEV3A'rs, EVADC'rs, and EVnthusiasts, One & All -

Here below is more PluginAmerica follow-on for the renown-now-classic Plug-in Parade, called Inaugural Parade West: Plug In, America! which was there in the sunny & bright of Santa Monica, California on Saturday, 17 January 2009 (with slight edits and annotations):

Recap: Plug In America's Inaugural Parade

With 100-percent participation, Plug In America pronounced its inaugural plug-in parade a total success, confident that President-Elect Obama himself will hear the message the event's participants sent: America needs one million plug-in vehicles by 2010 and 10 million by 2016.

All 74 vehicles that had signed up for the 2-mile parade through downtown Santa Monica showed up. Electric Vehicles (EVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) were included.

More coverage here. [ www.PluginAmerica.org ... see especially the Photo Album] "It was astounding, even for us in the movement to see 'old-time' RAV4 EVs-one of which had some 160,000 miles on it-parading beside prototypes from Ford and Mitsubishi, beside four Tesla Roadsters, beside a 50-ton truck and a PHEV school bus," said Plug In America spokeswoman Zan Dubin Scott [wife of Paul Scott]. "We even had an all-electric Hummer H2. The moral of this story is that EVs can meet any need.

"Roughly 250 drivers, spectators and supporters attended the parade, preceded by a press conference next to the City of Santa Monica's large solar car port equipped with EV chargers.Edward Kjaer, Director of Electric Transportation for Southern California Edison, said that nobody should think that plug-in technology isn't ready. "It is so ready," Kjaer said. "The country is ready, the market is ready, the people are ready and news flash, the technology is ready."

See Paul Scott's initial reporting from PluginAmerica below.

"I continue to read journalists and bloggers asking if there really is a market for EVs now that gas is back to $2/gallon. That question was answered in an unambiguous manner yesterday at Plug In America's history-making parade of 75 highway capable plug-in vehicles. From speedy Tesla Roadsters (4), to a Balcon truck used to move heavy containers in the Port of LA, the evidence was on display for all to see. The 250 people in attendance at the press conference, if asked, would tell these journalists that, "Yes, we all want to drive on renewable electricity instead of foreign oil. Just sell us the cars!"

These people are no different from most Americans, other then being lucky enough to live in this beautiful sun-drenched community.

I think Ed Kjaer, head of electric transportation for Southern California Edison, had the best quote at the podium saying that nobody should think EVs are just golf carts or that the technology isn’t ready: “It is so ready. The country is ready, the market is ready, the people are ready and news flash, the technology is ready.”

Zan and I were too tired to write much last night having spent the past two and half weeks planning the parade, but lucky for us, there was Andy Mannle who wrote the definitive story for us.

The "Spirit of DC's" Back on the Road Again! Yahoo, Yahoo! Coming out of Winter Quarters, Bisbee, Arizona

Cheers PHEV'rs, EVADC'rs, & EVnthusiasts, One & All,
The "Spirit" is definitely back on the road -- coming out of Winter Quarters - Bisbee, Arizona. No longer does the "Spirit" have itchy tires!
En route to Santa Monica, the "Spirit" did a few towns:

First Run was to Sierra Vista ... : EVJerry's follow-on session with 1LT Paul Anthony, Primary Health Car Provider at th Medical Health Facility at Ft Huachuca ... LT had lab results, which were good Yahoo news -- Cholestrol Level was 188 (down from 269). Next, the "Spirit" go her synthetic Mobil One oil change at Sierra Toyota. Plus there was visiting with Elsie, the Sierra Toyota General Manager, who's warming up to the "Spirit" and handing off a pile of plug-in literature, including two x DVD -- Austin Energy's "PluginPartners," and one on the Tango. EVJerr even signed up for the 2009 Prius PHEV, too! A Historic first at Sierra Toyota.

Second Run was to University of Arizona in Tucson. There the "Spirit" met up with EVJerry's grandniece, Katy Rose Heffernan with her two Frosh associates -- Clarin and Lissa. After being treated to tummy delights, the Frosh Co-eds were given a "show & tell" CANView demo with the "Spirit" along with a few passer-bys before the "Spirit" moveth EVJerr back on I-10, which was not exactually a Blue Highway, yet the "Spirit" endeavored to do blue highway speeds along with her new Garmin (something that EVJerr doesn't want leave home without~!) .

Third Run was to Tempe, just nearby Phoenix. It included a stayover at Green, Tree-loving and long time friend and former Sweetie, Karen Bauernschmidt.

The "Spirit's" Mileage Stats show her getting back into shape with a 54.8 MPG going in/around Bisbee, over to Sierra Vista, up to Tucson and on to Tempe for some 493.7 miles.

The "Spirit's" Getting Itchy Tires ... Readying for the PluginAmerica-sponsored Inaugural Parade West: Plug In, America. Come Saturday, 17 Jan 2009

Cheers EVADC'rs, PHEV'rs & EVnthusiasts, One & All -

The "Spirit of DC" is getting itchy tires and coming out of winter quarters in Home, Sweet Bisbee Arizona in order to be in the California sunshine for the PluginAmerica-sponsored Inaugural Parade West: Plug In, America! on Saturday, 17 January 2009 in Santa Monica. See PluginAmerica notice (somewhat edited and updated) ... from Paul Scott below:

Hey Everybody,

You may have heard that with 1,300 applicants, Plug In America (nor EVADC) wasn't among those selected for Obama's Presidential Inaugural Parade. So, PluginAmerica put out its own "Inaugural Parade West: Plug In, America!" on Sat., Jan. 17. PluginAmerica will issue a press release internationally.

Todate, PluginAmerica has secured 62 plus EVs and PHEVs, including Teslas, numerous RAVs (with tens of thousands of miles on each), Vectrix bikes, Chevy S10s and conversions ... including the "Spirit of DC" ... it's the largest gathering of plug-ins in years! PIA Members just started putting out the word and people are jumping on-board. It's nice, for a change, that these EVents have more cars now. The old EVs are still running after 6-8 years, and there are the new ones coming out every day, Tesla being the most exciting.

EVEN IF YOU DON'T HAVE AN EV, PLEASE COME OUT TO SANTA MONICA:
PluginAmerica wants you to come to show the media that this is an issue people care about. We want lots of people. We are asking all participants to arrive by 9 a.m. on Sat., Jan. 17:
Santa Monica Civic Auditorium
1885 Main St., Santa Monica, CA 90401.

There will be a parking charge for EVs entering the lot. There are lots of parking meters outside the lot for those who come without EVs. We'll start with a 9:30 a.m. press conference at the Santa Monica Civic parking lot--next to its solar carport with EV chargers -- then a short parade nearby.

Join in with PluginAmerica in urging Congress, Detroit and our new President to build plug-in vehicles, in calling for 1 million plug-ins by 2012 and, 15 million by 2016.

Also invited are California Senator Fran Pavley, author of the Nation's first global warming law, and several others to speak. An early confirmed speaker is JordanHoward, a local African American teen member of Green Ambassadors, a green youth organization. Note: Jordan introduced Hillary Clinton at an LA Obama fundraiser several weeks ago with a remarkable speech. Chris Paine will have a crew filming for the follow up to "Who Killed the Electric Car," which he's titled, "Revenge of the Electric Car.

PluginAmerica will be done around noon with what will be the only inaugural event of its kind in the Nation and the world.

Thank you for your support! Your presence at the event will be the concrete proof that Americans want to buy and drive plug-ins and want to stop global warming.

Please see our website,< www.pluginamerica.org >, and our Facebook page for more information.

Also, if you can participate, we'd like to get a count of people, so email Paul or Zan Scott.
