PHEV Day 144, Saturday, 28 February 2009, Holds a Two Variety of Folks Meeting at Flying Star plus Run to 41st State Capital, Santa Fe, New Mexico

Cheers PHEV3A'rs, EVADC'rs, and EVnthusiasts, One & All -

Saturday morning holds first a get-together of two variety of folks in Albuquerque -- EVnthusiasts, especially from the EAA (Electric Auto Association) and testy New Mexico Mensans. Some may be one and the same! Possibly, ClearChannel Radio in Albuquerque may be calling in as well when everyone meets up at noon, this Saturday, at the Flying Star Cafe on 8th Street and Silver Ave.

SPECIAL NOTE: Albuquerque has a PluginSupply PHEV Kit Dealer, George Daun GeoDaun@gmail.com. Electrick Car Conversion is George's operation! See www.ElectrickCarConversions.com for more details.

Hope springs forth that tomorrow will see the resurrection of a new Albuquerque Electric Vehicle Association (ALBEVA) ... and possibly, an UNM - Albuquerque EAA Educational Chapter as well. Fingers are crossed!

The "Spirit" will be en route to Santa Fe in mid-afternoon in order to make the 41st State Capital of the PHEV All Around America.

PHEV Day 143 - Thursday, 26 February 2009. From Gallup to Albuquerque Electric Vehicle Association!

Cheers PHEV3A'rs, EVADC'rs, and EVnthusiasts, One & All -

More info this evening, once situated in Albuquerque. However, it can be reported that Pat Allen Pat.Allen@CitComm.com from KKOB 770AM Radio, a 50,000 Watts flamethrow out of Albuquerque, did an interview with EVJerry this AM. While the "Spirit" was showing & shining to the public and patrons at the El Rancho Hotel, just off Route 66 by the way, EVJerr was multi-tasking -- soaking his sore tusch (some 28,000 P/HEV miles so far!) AND taking an interview. Acoustics seemed pretty good; Pat, a Prius owner, was quite informative for gathering the Plug-in Hybrid EV All Around America news, which should be playing this afternoon and later on, depending upon the discretion of the anchors. Just in case, the KKOB Phone is: (505) 767-9185.

Before hypermiling as in the "Spirit of Drive Carefully" - a technique for scooting along Route 66 (and even going at 57MPG onInterState 40) en route to Albuquerque, a call came in from ClearChannel Radio in Gallup! 99.9 KXTC Radio "CJ the DJ" lined up EVJerry for an interview on site. ClearChannel Radio Market Specialist, Mark Jordan Mark.Jordan@ClearChannle.com, and a Gallup Chamber of Commerce Member, linked CJ and EVJerr linked up for the second radio spot interview of the day. At the station, CJ interviewed EVJerry about Plug-ins in general and in particular, about the PHEV All Around America. Hopefully, the radio audience took to checking out www.SpiritofDC.com.

Afterwards the radio interview session, both CJ and Mark got a 'show & shine' demo of the "Spirit." They were also left with a handful of Plug-in literature. Then, t'was almost off to Albuquerque; the "Spirit" filled up on 7.0 gallons of 88 Octane mid-grade at $1.96 for $13.85 worth. Speedometer read: 487.3 - Trip miles / 101,936 miles in toto. Thus, with strong tailwinds and downhill elevations plus hypermiling, the "Spirit" had registered 68.9MPG for 486.7 miles, greatly aided by electricity with lots of opportunity charges thrown in.

The run to Albuquerque had these readings: 99.9MPG for 3 miles; 94.1 for 8; 66.7 for 23; 72.3 for 44; 72.2 for 64; 74.6 for 94; 74.8 for 113; and finally, with the stopover for quarters at Kirkland AFB, 70.7MPG for 150 miles.

PHEV Day 142 -Wednesday, 25 Feb 2009 Onward to Gallup, New Mexico ... And Lots of Serendipity There!

Cheers PHEV3A'rs, EVADC'rs, and EVnthusiasts, One & All -

After the "Take It Easy" delight of standing on the corner of Winslow, Arizona, the "Spirit" took another opportunity charge at the Winslow Chamber of Commerce & Visitor Center, thanks again to Angela Gonzales, the Chamber Assistant. This was at the newly refurbished 2nd Avenue center on Route 66 , which was a former Hubbell Trading Post, a rather historic building.

The "Spirit" even got in some KINO Radio time. Local Winslow KINO Manager Lloyd Engelhardt at (928) 289-3364, did a telephonic interview with EVJerry and played a noon day segment about the PHEV All Around America ... with other segments to be played later on.

Around noon, the "Spirit" took to "show & shine" outside of the Casa Blanca Restaurant, right there on Route 66, while EVJerry was treated to lunch by the Winslotarians - the Rotary Club of Winslow -- all in exchange for a Plug-in Presentation and a Q & A session! What a deal!

The Rotarians were: Madame President Katie Johnson, Fuel Sales; Pete Kretsedemas, Restaurant; Bob Mansell, Education - Superintendent; Charles McLaws, Automobile Sales; Terry Nagle, Real Estate; Jim Pate, Container Sales; Dale Patton, County Attorney; Harold Soehner, Railroad Transportation; Olivia Todd, Insurance Agent; and visiting Rotarian couple from South New Castle, Delaware, Joe and Marlene Hortiz. And Steve, the Casa Blanca waiter, took a shine to the "Spirit" on his own accord.

After lunch and a brief demo of the "Spirit," it was back on the road -- Route 66 doing electric miles until back on I-40 and again hypermiling at 55MPH to Gallup, New Mexico.

Before arriving in Gallup, PHEV3A Charlie Garlow called and said El Rancho Hotel had a courtey room set aside. EVer so super! El Rancho is a classic, first cabin hotel where the movie stars stayed! It's known as the "Home of the Movie Stars" with the Charm of Yesteryear, and the Convenience of Tomorrow! El Rancho is definite worth a visit when you come to Gallup and cruise up and down Route 77

Special Note: The "Spirit" is probably the first ever PHEV to have visited Gallup, NM as well as Winslow, AZ.

The El Rancho Hotel courtesy stayover was part & parcel of the idea proposed to tap into the marvelous resources of Gallup Chamber of Commerce of Bill Lee, Executive Director and Chamber Assistant, Sandra Young along with her sidekicks, Alice and Linsey in order to align with its local merchants and population, hopefully in exchange for advertising a green and clean image in the media as well as on the www.SpiritofDC.com website. Well, it happened quite nicely thanks to General Manager Anna Dallago, Bookkeeper Rachael Ortega, Father-Son Front Desk Clerk Team of Leroy and Leander McCray (with the later also being the restaurant host) ... first at the El Rancho Hotel, where this evening the "Spirit" has been enjoying a prolonged opportunity charge next to the marque. The "Spirit" is parked conspiously outfront of El Rancho, just off Route 66 ... ready for public viewing on Thursday morning and early afternoon.

Next came the tapping-in with the Gallup Chamber of Commerce's "After Hours Meeting" at Big Cheese Pizza. The "Spirit" got another earlier opportunity charge, courtesy of Big Cheese Pizza owners, Shawn and Jennifer Dowling, while EVJerry met Mark Jordan from Clear Channel to talk radio interviewing over pizza (of course!). End result was an email to Clear Channel General Manager, Mary Ann Armijo. The continued PHEV All Around America (PHEV3A) hope is that Chamber members will be able to set up the "Spirit of DC" with the business community, the media at large, such as Clear Channel, and perhaps, a school or two for creating EVducational presentations and PHEV demonstrations before the "Spirit" heads out to Albuquerque in midafternoon. Gallup has certainly joined the ranks, as illustrated by Winslow and Yosemite Chambers of Commerce, of those contributing to the History-making of an All American called "Spirit of DC" with its Sun Belt Grand Finale. Thanks EVer Gallup for assisting this non-profit organization EVenture all around America on its Sun Belt run to DC.

In wrapping up, here is a worthwhile quote from the late Charles Kuralt in his book, "On the Road with Charles Kuralt" - "Thanks to the Interstate Highway system, it is now possible to travel across the country from coast to coast without seeing anything." Well, not for Blue Highway-minded EVJerry hypermiling with the "Spirit!" Lots and lots of America is being taken in! In fact, there may be a new EVentful book in the making here: Plug-in' Around America! As Moveth by the "Spirit." Stay tuned as a search for a ghostwriter continues, !por seguro!

Day Off - Standing on a Corner in Winslow, Arizona

Cheers PHEV3A'rs, EVADC'rs, and EVnthusiasts, One & All -

After a night's charging at Motel 10 and one of rest, the "Spirit" and EVJerry took to a day of rest and relaxation. And sightseeing ... starting off with an opportunity charge graciously given by the Winslow Visitors' Center staff -- Executive Director, Bob Hall, and Chamber of Commerce Assistant, Angela Gonzales. See Chamber of Commerce & Visitor Center website: www.WinslowArizona.org for more info besides what's copied & pasted below:

There's a magic about the city of Winslow.
Take just a moment to stop and look around, and you'll discover a whole new dimension to this unique western city. Civilizations have thrived in the area for centuries... the ancient Hopi village of Homolovi, the Mormon settlement of Brigham city, the booming town of Winslow over 100 years ago. More recent additions to the City of Winslow are The Standin' on the Corner Park, which has become an interesting draw for music fans who remember the line "standin on the corner in Winslow Arizona, such a fine sight to see" from the #1 hit Take It Easy, sung by the Eagles.

Furthermore, Angela later provided a wonderful assistance by lining up courtesy lodging at SUPER 8, right there on Historic Route 66, with Manager Pravin Kothari. Pravin provided a most excellent parking spot for the "Spirit" to shine & show ... right in the very front of the Winslow's Super 8 Motel. See also www.Super8.com. After a PHEV demo, the charming Receptionist, Shanna Trujillo, saw that the "Spirit" and EVJerry were settled in for the evening.

Tho taken as a PHEV Day Off, such a day of rest still requires lots of planning, let alone emailing for EVJerry, who wants the "Spirit" to return to "show & shine" at the Winslow Visitors Center in the morning, possibly take in a Winslow school or two, and then hit the road for nearby Gallup, New Mexico.

EVer from "Taking It Easy" standing on a corner in Winslow, Arizona,

PS Here's the words to the song made famous in the 70's by the EAGLES as written by Jackson Browne and Glen Frey: TAKE IT EASY

Well, I'm runnin'down the road trying to loosen my load
I've go seven women on my mind
Four that wanna own me, two that wanna stone me,
One says she's a friend of min.

Take it easy, take it easy,
Don't let the sound of your own wheels drive you crazy
Lighten up while you still can don't even try to understand
Just find a place to make your stand and
Take it easy.

Well, I'm a standing on a corner in Winslow, Arizona and
such a fine sight to see,
it's a girl, my Lord, in a flat bed Ford slowin'
down to take a look at me

Come on baby, don't say maybe, I gotta know
If your sweet love is gonna save me
We may lose and we may win,
Though we will never be here again,
So open up, I'm climbin' in,
So take it easy.

Well I'm running down the road trying to loosen my load,
Got a world of trouble on my mind,
Lookin' for a lover who won't blow my cover,
She's so hard to find.

Take it easy .... Take it easy,
Don't let the sound of your own wheels make you crazy,
Come on baby, don't say maybe,
I gotta know if your sweet love is going to save me.

Ooh oooh ooh ooh ooh ooh
Oh we got it easy,
We ought to Take It Easy.

PHEV Day 141 - Tuesday, 24 February 2009 - Off to Schools And More! "Spirit's" Best EVer Run -- Flagstaff's Route 66 to a Corner in Winslow, Arizona

Cheers PHEV3A'rs, EVADC'rs, and EVnthusiasts, One & All -

Monday, 23 February 2009, started off with SCHOOLS. First, the "Spirit" was to show & shine for several classes at the Sturgeon Cromer Elementary School, which 6th Grader, Mary Schlanger, had organized and even mapped out the hallway route to Mrs Helen Fiskel's room. See Mary's blogging for first hand accounting and maybe later pixs for Monday, 23 February 2009 first EVent.

In early afternoon, the "Spirit" dropped into the Pine Forest Charter School for an opportunity charge as well as to show & shine for several classes (8th Grade, 6th Grade and 5th Grade) along with a number of Staff & Faculty members at this Waldorf-inspired school, "where love of learning is the Main Lesson" See also http://www.pineforestschool.com/. Thanks to Principal Mike Heffernon (and EVJerry's Nephew-in-Law), who also got to bond with the "Spirit" doing some electric miles, and then re-bond again with his son, Michael, in doing some more electric miles.

So far, the best EVev Run for the "Spirit of DC" occurred late afternoon on Monday in traveling in and around Flagstaff and tallying some 40 electric miles ... before taking off on the Mother Road, also known as Route 66 - definitely a Blue Highway (versus Interstate 40) for some 60 miles to Winslow, AZ. With a strong tailwind and going down in elevation from 7,000' to 5,000', the "Spirit" registered these numbers on Route 66: 99.9MPG for 43 Miles, 44, 45, 47, 49, 50, and 51 Miles before the ICE kicked on. Yet, the 5-minute blue bar readings consequently remained at 99.9MPG for the "Spirit" even with a set 55 MPH on Interstate 40 as follows: 60MPG; 100; 100; 100; 100; 100 (at 51 Miles mark); 100; 100; 100; 100; 70; 100; 95; 95; 95; 75; 85; and 75MPG. It was slightly changing on the approach to Winslow: 98.5MPG for 98 miles; 97.0 for 101; 96.6 for 102; and wrapping up at 93.8MPG at 106 Miles.

Note: Mileage from Phoenix to Winslow was: 343.8 miles.

The CANView screen recorded per mile for the last 31 miles before coming into Winslow the following: 49MPG; 185; 100; 84; 210; 75; 76; 61; 78; 255; 59; 135; 59; 41; 67; 84; 77; 70; 79; 46; 47; 93; 103; 255; 72; 37; and 84MPG.

Conclusion Reached: Since the "Spirit" had at least 51 electric miles to begin with and did better than the 55MPG average in traveling to Winslow, it's concluded that the "Spirit" did way better than a previous stated goal of 101MPG aided by electricity. Credit is due in large measure to a re-invigorated PbA battery pack of B&B Batteries from PluginSupply and Robb Protheroe's ensuring the PHEV kit was functioning as intended ... with the "Spirit" getting a 10-12 miles range on a single charge.

Now the EVndeavor is to repeat the objective goal of geting 101MPG aided by electricity as frequently as possible in the Sun Belt Grand Finale run to Washington, DC, and in time for the EPA 5th National Sustainable Design EXPO on the Capital Mall, come Earth Day Weekend of 17-20 April 2009.

EV Jerry and Sprit Of DC Visit Flagstaff EAA

The Flagstaff EAA was thrilled and honored to have EV Jerry and his plug-in hybrid car "the Spirit of DC" visit on Sunday 2/22.  We were able to partake in the sacred ritual of "getting the finger", or putting a Flagstaff EAA sticker on his car.  The club joins some 45 other clubs who have already been "fingered" and are now accompanying EV Jerry and Spirit on his trek across the country.

Jerry patiently explained the workings of the plug hybrid Prius to all of us who had never seen one before.  Truly a technological marvel, getting 100+ MPG.  It does this by running on electricity part of the time and on gas for the rest.  The electric power comes from either the gas engine or by plugging it in to a regular wall socket.  He shared some very interesting video with us about other EVs around the country and brought news of the happenings in the Bisbee EAA. We were also intrigued with the realtime Google map of Spirit's current location, a thing I hope to have someday for my almost teenage daughter. After his presentation, we put a little too much charge in our own batteries at the Sizzler salad bar.

Jerry and Spirit stayed with my Wife Andi, my daughter Mary and me this weekend.  While he visited, we offered him use of an outlet which enabled him to charge up and get 100 MPG for his ride into town.  During his stay, Jerry regaled us with tales of his adventures with Spirit.  On Saturday 2/21 Jerry joined us, Ward Davis and his wife Bracken for dinner.  Ward and I really enjoyed discussing the nuts and bolts of hybrids with Jerry.  The ladies did not find  the motorhead conversation all that amusing and Mary preferred to discuss her animals.  Jerry and Spirit did really well in the 7000 ft altitude, snow and freezing nights.

We wish EV Jerry and Spirit happy trails and we salute them for spreading the word about EVs "one town at a time".  We hope to see you again at the Flagstaff Sustainable living fair in September.

PHEV Day 140, Flagstaff EAA Special Meeting on Sunday, 22 Feb 09, 3:00 - 5:00PM

Cheers PHEV3A'rs, EVADC'rs, and EVnthusiasts, One & All -

The "Spirit" is definitely making rounds and bounding! First, bonding a few electric miles with Bill Schlanger at his Electric Blue Motors www.ElectricBlueMotors.com . See a tidbit of copied & pasted text below:

Electric Blue Motors Believe in the dream! It’s about to come true.

Engineering A New Future For The Electric Car When is green blue? When electric is affordable! Electric Blue™. The first affordable electric car, a truly “green” car designed for the driving you do most. *** Electric Blue™ is a close-range, fully-electric car designed to cut the average American family loose from the gasoline pump. No longer will your hard-earned money go up in exhaust. No longer will your car spew out carcinogens and greenhouse gases. At Electric Blue™, we are gearing up to convert popular, brand-new compact cars and sedans into electric vehicles with enough range to meet your day-to-day driving needs. Imagine commuting to work or school, shopping, taking the kids to soccer –without ever visiting a gas station again! And with all the performance and amenities you demand in a vehicle. Not a conversion kit. No luxury car sticker shock. Just clean, efficient transportation that gets you where you want to go at an extremely affordable price. Believe in the dream! It’s about to come true.

Then, the "Spirit" bonded with Northern Arizona U. Junior, Nick Negrete, an Intern at Electric Blue Motors for the last year and a half, and Chris Szelest, a newly on-board Electric Blue Motors technician.

Stay by for more ... after FEAA Special Meeting ... and hopefully with newly recruited PHEV3A Webblogger, Mary Schlanger providing input along with edits this evening ... and tomorrow from her Elementary School!

PHEV 139, Saturday 21 Feb 09 - Videotaping Session at the Suiters and the Run to Flagstaff and Flagstaff EAA "Special Meeting"

Cheers PHEV3A'rs, EVADC'rs, and EVnthusiasts, One & All -

The "Spirit" all charged up at the Ashers in Phoenix proceeded over to the Suiters in Glendale, essentially going 9 electric miles there. The "Spirit" was met by Ricky Suiter Rick.Suiter@yahoo.com with a plug at the ready for another opportunity charge while visiting. In the short trip over, the "Spirit" has a fully blue'd out screen showing that 100MPG, or as declared, 101 MPG had been reached for 30 plus minutes -- that is the regular Prius screen show six 5-minute blue segments all together in sequence!

While awaiting Arizona State University senior, Amanda Wible, an ASU Junior, who is in the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communications, to show in the early afternoon, Ricky and EVJerry conversed about EVs and PHEVs and Phoenix EAA www.PhoenixEAA.com ... while the "Spirit" was enjoying her opportunity charge. We also took in the EAA Annual Members Meeting ... until Amanda came. Then, it was almost a steady couple of hours doing a two-for-one videotaping -- the "Spirit" and Ricky's "Electric Lime" were in the limelight of a delightfully sunny and bright Arizona day. Amanda was crewing just about everything -- Director, Cameraman, and Mikewoman! It was a neat time! Everyone enjoyed! Phoenix EAA may get new members when on Tuesday (fingers crossed) Amanda's EVforts pay off on ASU's Channel 8. And who knows, maybe ASU students join in with Ricky to set up ASU EAA Educational Chapter - the first in Arizona, and the third one in the Nation.

After fueling up at Sweet Tomato's in Glendale, EVJerry had an anxious "Spirit" on Interstate 17 . But fortunately due to construction, it was at a blue highway speed of 55MPH for a long time! And going up thru the mountain, up to Flagstaff's 7,000 ft elevation. Readings en route were as follows: 99.9MPG for 13; 99.9 for 20; 86.2 for 38; 76.4 for 47; 62.2 for 58; 58.0 for 75; 57.7 for 94; 58.3 for 100; 51.7 for 115; 49.8 for 131 ... and then on to I-49 and Hwy 89 up to Flagstaff EAA Presidential Couple, Bill and Andy Schlanger's "Mountain Retreat & Spread" with last reading of 50.7MPG for 159 miles ... before the "Spirit" was taking another opportunity charge, while EVJerry was treated to a marvelous lasagna dinner with Bill and Andi's daughter, Mary and fellow FEAA's Ward and Brackin Davis. Note: 6th Grader and EVnthusiast Mary is also promising PHEV3A webblogger and pixposter with her cell phone. She was wow'ed with the Map in tracking the "Spirit" to their home area. Special Note: Mary has set up a Monday visit to Sturgeon Cromber Elementary School for the "Spirit."

On Sunday, the "Spirit" will be the honored at a Flagstaff EAA Special Meeting on Sunday from 3:00 - 5:00PM. See also www.FlagstaffEAA.org/Index.html .

PHEV Day 138 - Friday Feb 09. Run From Bisbee to Phoenix for Link Up with ASU and Phoenix EAA, Ricky Suiter

Cheers PHEV3A'rs, EVADC'rs, and EVnthusiasts, One & All -

The Friday run from Bisbee up to Phoenix went smoothly without any event. The "Spirit" was recording 66.3MPG for 149 miles and registering 100,499 miles with fill-up at the Pilot Station in Eloy, AZ, taking in midgrade 8.295 gals x $2.05 = $17.88. Speed on I-10 was a blue highway mph around 63. The Eloyto-Phoenix run showed 59.6MPG for 77 miles.

In addition to Phoenix holding a comfy stopover spot at EVJerry's Bro Jim and Sweet Sis-in-Law, Rosie, contacting was being made for a Media EVent link-up with Arizona State U. Senior, Amanda Wible. Amanda was single handedly taking on the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communications videotaping assignment. Link up was to turn out to be at Phoenix EAA'r, Ricky Suiter's Glendale home. Ricky's a ASU Senior in Sustainable Environment, and who also sports "Electric Lime" - a Saturn EV. More to follow!

Also, see the "Sun Belt Grand Finale" Map Posting as well. Due to earlier snow in Flagstaff, the "Spirit" was reportedly delayed a week for a run to Flagstaff . But EVJerry reports that the "Spirit" is there now to visit with EAA'rs. In addition, after visiting FEAA Presidential Couple Bill & Andy Schlanger's daughter, Mary's elementary school on Monday, the "Spirit" will be looking at going straight across the country via Winslow and Holbrook, AZ, Gallup, Albuquerque, Santa Fe (41st State Capital), and Las Vegas, NM ... and on to Oklahoma City (42nd State Capital) on the Sun Belt Run to DC.

PHEV3A Week Plus in Review from San Diego - Phoenix - Tucson - Bisbee - Douglas - Bisbee - ...

Cheers PHEV3A'rs, EVADC'rs and EVnthusiasts, One & All -

In San Diego, the "Spirit" did on PHEV Day 135, Tuesday, 10 February 2009, a run to Cuyamaca College ... and stories plus pixs are being waited upon. But suffice to say, the "Spirit" did lots of charging around:

One showing was 95.4MPG for 90 with the 5-minute blue screen having readings: 30MPG; 100; 95; 70; and 100MPG. Once recharged: 90MPG; 85; 100; 100MPG with showings of 99.9MPG for 71 Miles; 97.3 for 30; 93.5 for 33; 86.4 for 38 and finally 68.4MPG for 54 Miles (all of which involved a long Interstate run to Pacific Beach and Ocean Beach from Home Sweet Mom's Home in La Mesa, CA.

Wednesday, 11 February 2009 was continuing the reading after re-charging to 72.4MPG for 70 miles, but t'was exactly a PHEV Day, but more of one of rest and visiting with Mom and Sister Mary Catherine in re-scheduling preparation for Arizona. Note: With some 30 inches of snow in Flagstaff, the "Spirit" opted for Bisbee first and Flagstaff a week later. Still in running around and re-charging back up, the "Spirit" showed these readings 70.6 for 79 with 5-minute blue bar readings of 100, 75, 100, 100, 100, 100 for over 25 minutes of 100MPG. Summary from the CANView showed the start of the trip back in mid-January to be 78 hours, 48 minutes ... with 2,492 miles driven with MPG Averge of 55 AH 66.87 and ICE: 55%. Missing out there in San Diego on just one more opportunity charge to give us 12 electric miles, we would have hit the GOAL of 101MPG. But Alas! the "Spirit" had to end the run at 78.9MPG for 88 Miles. So close!

Thursday was PHEV 136 Day, 11 February 2009, with the Run to Phoenix.
The "Spirit" filled up at the Lake Murray Shell Station in La Mesa with Midgrade at $2.33 x 7.8 gal = $18.24. Data computed showed: 50.2MPG for 247 miles within San Diego County. Mileometer read: 99,274. Essentially, that means the "Spirit" being on the road for nearly 27,000 miles.

Starting the run on Hwy 94, and fortunately with Tailwinds, the "Spirit" started on the 78.2MPG for 88 Miles already there and recorded a 80.9MPG for 98 miles with 5-minute blue bar readings of 100; 100, 100, 75; 100; 100 ... and finally hitting 82.5MPG for 101 miles ... before cruising on the Interstate 8. By Yuma, the reading was down to 63.1MPG for 300 miles. For Phoenix, it was 58.1MPG for 457 Miles. Stayover was at Home Sweet Karen Bauernschmidt's Apt in Tempe.

On Friday the 13th, it was back to Bisbee, sunny, bright and DRY! ... late in the evening. Especially after confirming that Flagstaff was expecting another snow storm. In Bisbee, it was getting the "Spirit" her new personalized Arizona Environmental license plate: SPRTODC just wished there was a little "o" so it'd be easier to read as SPRToDC! Oh, well, it's all part of the PHEVxperience! Some charging and recharging was ventured to hit the 101MPG in running around, yet the Mule Mountains undermined certain efforts ... still, 16 Feb Monday reading was 63.0MPG for 103 Miles.

On Wednesday, the "Spirit" did a show & tell for my fellow Borderline Mensan associates in Sierra Vista after the third Wednesday luncheon ... with Fred, Donne, Ken & Linda, Charlie & Marie, Jeannie, Martha, Joanna, and a few more plus my friend, Joe Quinn in tow. Still waiting on pix from LOCSEC Fred Bauer (Chief officer in a Mensa Chapter is the local secretary; EVJerry is the Borderline ASSTLOCSEC by the way). Pixs TBP as in "to be posted" later. Joanna Soper, Trustee with MENSA Education & Research Foundation JoannaSoper@MensaFoundation.org has offered to assist in locating Mensans along the "Spirit's" way from Flagstaff, AZ thru NM, TX, LA, MS, AR, TN, and AL.

On Thursday, 19 February 2009, in Douglas, Arizona, the "Spirit" was swarmed over by 100's of Kids! First, there was showing the "Spirit" in the morning at Douglas HS as arranged by Media Center Specialist/Librarian Joan Riddle. The "Spirit" saw Automative Instructor's classes of students right there while taking an opportunity charge. They came in curious wave after curious wave. The "Spirit" was the first EVer PHEV seen at Douglas HS ... and the appreciating students took to heart the slogan: "KICK GAS." Even the Staff & Faculty did likewise. One instructor and photographer, Mark Silverstein, who does Film and Video Production Observar@Earthlink.net hopefully will be publishing some pixs ... soon! Who knows but maybe there's another term for "DC" besides "District of Columbia," "Direct Current" and "Drive Carefully" ... and that's "Douglas City" especially if Douglas HS becomes the first high school Electric Auto Association (EAA) Educational Chapter. More TBA

In the early afternoon, the "Spirit" appeared in the Ray Borane Middle School year ... with a ready plug awaiting. Thanks to the Librarian Judy. Here for three hours, the kids came in class after class. EVer so fortunate, these wll manned, pleasant, EVer friendly kids were a joy, because the shining & showing with the "Spirit" (as well as opportunity charing) went on for three hours! Pixs are expected from Judy. TBD.

Now on Friday, 20th of February 2009, the "Spirit" is just about ready to scoot up to Flagstaff and the EAA Chapter there ... via a Phoenix stopover and a special showing for Ricky Suiter of the Phoenix EAA on Saturday.

EVer in the sunny and bright of Arizona (fingers crossed!)

Tuesday, 10 Feb 09 - PHEV Day 135. "Spirit of DC" Runs to Automotive Shop at Cuyamaca Community College for a 'Show & Shine' Presentation

Cheers PHEV3A'rs, EVADC's, and EVnthusiasts, One & All -

After so much weather in California, commonly known as rain elsewhere, the "Spirit of DC" was charged and ready for a Tuesday run over to Cuyamaca Community College for a show & shine display, courtesy of Diesel & Electronics Instructor Jim "P" Hannibal. Upon arrival, the "Spirit" was heartily greeted by the Automotive Contingency at CCC: Jim Custeau, Program Coordinator, Bill Lewon, Chris Branton and Jim Hannibal ... in addition to some 20 students coming out.

Also there for Renewable Energy Seminars was Alan Ridley, who did capture a few pixs of the "Spirit" with certain personalities while the "Spirit" took advantage of an opportunity charge. Plenty of EV and PHEV literature was distro'd to the instructors for further duplication. Also, included was "how to do" an EAA Education Chapter. So Cuyamaca Community College has an opportunity to be the first two year college to become an EAA Educational Chapter -- more than enough staff and faculty members (only requires one who is provided a courtesy EAA membership) and three students either gratis or with $25 EAA student membership ... for starters. See www.EAAEV.org and clicking on "About Us" and then "Contact" in order to get to the EAA Chapter Handbook.

The CCC students were attentive and inquiring! And the Cuyamaca Community College Automotive Instructors! Note: They may now have the opportunity to be the first community college in San Diego, pehaps even California, possibly The Nation ... to set up a Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle Technology Course. And be ahead of the learning curve in meeting the need for training students for Plug-ins whether EVs or HEVs as the cars that can recharge America!

Expecting Alan to provide a few pixs to post on the webblog as well story on the "Spirit" by Jim Hannibal

The "Spirit" went to CCC in less than 9 miles at 99.9MPG (probably about 7 electric miles en toto) and returned after charging with 99.9MPG for 17 miles. More stats to follow.

A Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle Wants to Visit Your School

PRLog (Press Release)Feb 06, 2009 – The "Spirit of DC's" on the road again on its Sun Belt Grand Finale from San Francisco to Washington, DC.

Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle All Around America (PHEV3A) tour with "EVJerry" Asher driving started last year on Earth Day, in front of the Nation’s Capitol. The plug-in hybrid vehicle the “Spirit of DC" was designed to run on electricity alone for about 10 miles before reverting back to acting like an ordinary hybrid. Now the "Spirit" is busy promoting plug-ins at America’s schools.

The PHEV3A mission is to educate America one town (or in this case one school) at a time on getting its own energy independence back by moving away from imported oil to using home grown electrons preferably from renewable energy sources like solar, wind and hydro-power. The Spirit f DC will complete the PHEV All Around America educational tour back in Washington, DC on the weekend before Earth Day at the Environmental Protection Agency’s 5th Annual National Sustainable Design Expo.

Thursday, 5 February 09 - PHEV Day 134. "Spirit" Running to Thousand Oaks for Link-Up with Ventura County EAA Members

Cheers PHEV3A'rs, EVADC'rs, and EVnthusiasts, One & All -

Today was a rainy mellow sort of day - California was having weather, so they say! Leisure travel was from San Luis Obispo with a fill-up at Vanderberg AF Base in Lompoc after cruising along Hwy 101/ Pacific Coast Hwy 1 to Thousand Oaks. In the evening, the "Spirit" showed her CANView circuit boards, back and front, signage and battery pac to the 45th EAA Sister Chapter in the PHEV All Around America EVducational Tour -- Ventura Country EAA Members were: hosting VCEAA Treasurer/Secretary and Webmaster, Bruce Tucker; VCEAA Prez, Richard Cox, and Photag-Physicist, Joseph Memeda.

The three VCEAA'rs also received Plug-in Info Pacs. Bruce passed along info on Solar Prius - Solar Electrical Systems, which interests the "Spirit." So hopefully, a Friday visit there will be possible. Especially en route to visit with Earl Cox with Aero Vironment in Simi Valley, CA. Note: Earl is due to pick up his Tesla this weekend in Palo Alto.

Stats to follow.

Wednesday, 4 Feb 09. PHEV Day 132 with the "Spirit" taking on the Scenic California Coastline per PCH 1

Cheers PHEV3'rs, EVADC'rs, and EVnthusiasts, One & All -

Shortly, the "Spirit" will be taking on the scenic California coastline per Pacific Coast Hwy 1. And more will follow.

Yet, this AM, I got Kay Crow's email about her story appearing earlier in the Sierra Mountain Times ... as copied & pasted below with pix to the left:

“Spirit of DC” Goes the Long and Winding Road to Groveland. Story and photos by Kay Crow

[Go to the link for viewing story & photo]

Friday January 23 brought the “Spirit of DC,” a Prius Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vechicle (PHEV) to Groveland’s Tioga High School. “EVJerry” Asher from Bisbee, Arizona, was hosted by Peggy Mosley of The Groveland Hotel and Sandy Bradley, Principal of Tioga High. EVJerry is part of the Team EVfort from EVADC – the Electric Vehicle Association of Greater Washington, DC to do a Tour of America with this PHEV. Now it’s time for the return trip to the National Mall in Washington D.C. The “Spirit” has visited 40 of the 48 state capitals educating people at the green grassroots level from all walks of life in Middle America, especially students who can make a difference with future EV technology. His 2005 Toyota PRIUS PHEV carries 20 12-volt gel batteries in the battery pack. With each lead acid battery at about 16 pounds, it totals 320 pounds, which allows the “Spirit” to use more electricity than a regular hybrid. Each charge up should provide 10-12 electric miles. Thus, with constant and repeated charge-ups for travel around town, it’s possible to do 101 miles per gallon assisted with electricity. Nickel metal hydride (the same as in the regular Prius) and a lithium ion battery are options, although more expensive, for uses as well. Asher is passionate about his PHEV and plans to have the “Spirit of DC” returning to the National Mall on Earth Day Weekend in April, where the “Spirit” was christened last year on Earth Day. He hopes one day the “Spirit” will have a new home in the Smithsonian.

Tuesday, 3 Feb 09 - Semi-PHEV Day of Relaxed Travel to Monterey while taking in the Marvelous Pacific Coast Scenery, Surf, and Sounds

Cheers PHEV3A'rs, EVADC'rs, and EVnthusiasts, One & All -

Consider that the "Spirit" cooled her tires today, while EVJerry took in the renown Monterey Bay Aquarium this afternoon as a semi-day off. Tonight, the "Spirit" is taking a opportunity charge at the Monterey Hostel International. EVJerry's looking at playing catch-up. PHEV3A Co-Chair Joe Lado is upgrading webblog with Sun Belt Grand Finale Map, which has projected routing from San Francisco to Washington. PHEV3A Spokesman, Charlie Garlow, is working up the Media and the Chamber of Commerce contacts en route to Morro Bay, San Luis Obispo, Ventura, and later on to the Greater LA Area for the coming days ahead.

Before taking on much, much more of that marvelous Pacific Coast scenery, surf and sounds on the way down to Big Sur and beyond on Pacific Coast Hwy 1, EVJerry will endeavor to rest up a tad earlier this foggy eve.

Monday, 2 Feb 09 - PHEV Day 131 ... Run to Santa Cruz for the "Spirit's" Linking Up with Central Coast EAA'rs in the PM

Cheers PHEV3A'rs, EVADC'rs, and EVnthusiasts, One & All -

In early afternoon, the "Spirit of DC" left Chuck Olson's place in Santa Clara with a registration reading of 99.9MPG for 8 miles and a topped off battery pack. Santa Cruz was on the radar screen.

At 13 miles, it was still 99.9MPG going roughly 32MPH. At 17 miles, the ICE kicked in, but it was still 99.9MPG for 18 miles. Reading from the CANView had these mileage marks: 255; 255; 255, 83; 82; 255; 255; 71; 117; 197; 180; 161; and 255. Aside from the initial 35MPH five-minute blue bar reading, the rest were 99.9MPH so that the "Spirit" had some 25 minutes doing her declared 101MPG assisted by electricity. Note: Travel involved traveling over a mountain range.

The reading for arriving in Santa Cruz was an amazing 92.0MPG for 41 miles. The mileage marks were: 99; 45; 131; 30; 25; 34; 19; 23; 16; 30; 84; 225; 255; 93; 255; 255; 255; 147; 80; 132; 197; 255; 99; 255; 255; 255; 78;255; 255; and 255. Santa Cruz run showed 99.9MPG for 50 miles.

Once in Santa Cruz, the "Spirit" took an opportunity charge at Electric Sierra Cycles courtesy of Keith L. Hodgson, President ... and apparently ESC's Number One Worker Bee (at least in the off-season). In return, the Ever friendly and helpful Keith got a handful of EV/PHEV literature and a spiel on linking up with Electric Auto Association's Chapter -- Central Coast EAA. Note: Electric Sierra Cycles even had li-ion batteries for its e-bikes. Check out Keith's website: www.ElectricRecBikes.com. Or email Keith: escuspd@attitude.com.

After checking in with Jeff at the Santa Cruz International Hostel - a set of neat cottages probably a long block from the Pacific Ocean, the "Spirit" with a decent charge headed out for the New Leaf Community Market at 1210 -41st Avenue for a 6:30PM link-up with Central Coast EAA'rs and Cabrillo Community College Instructor, Luis Sonsino, who does solar energy coursework. Carol Long - a GEM owner and Ed Bulicz - an engineer, were the CCEAA'rs, who joined Luis and EVJerry, while thanks to the New Leaf Community Market, Gina DeKort, the "Spirit" got to suck in amps fully at the NLCM loading area - her second opportunity charge in Santa Cruz.

Note: the 3-mile run to and 3-mile run from New Leaf showed 6 more electric miles to the tally.

EVer,

"Spirit" & EVJerry

PS Pixs hopefully will be forthcoming showing the "Spirit," especially with the EAA decal with the CCEAA lettering.

PHEV Day 129 - Saturday, 31 January 2009 -- "Spirit of DC" Showing & Shining in the San Francisco Sun at Ft Mason

Cheers PHEV3A'rs, EVADC'rs, and EVnthusiasts, One & All -

After a Saturday photo session with the "Spirit of DC" at San Francisco's Ft Mason Chapel near by the Flagpole with scenery abounding, the "Spirit" took a reconnoiter of the route South ... now that it's so easy with normal PHEV operations with re-invigorated set of PbA.

The Prius screen read blue bars of 5-minute 99.0MPG as follows: 100; 70; 100; 100; 100; 100. The "Spirit" almost made some 30 minutes of what's declared over 101 MPG! The CANView screen readings for the first ten miles: 96MPG; 255; 212; 255; 105; 67; 93; 175; 160; 255. The other readings were 89.9 MPG for 11 miles; 97.9 for 15; 89.8 for 17; and finally in at 87.5MPG for 18 miles ... before recharging up once again for Sunday's run to Santa Clara.

EVer,

"Spirit" & EVJerry

Sunday, 1 Feb 2009 - "Spirit's" Still in High Spirits ... After the Super Bowl ... Ready'ing for Santa Cruz, South & Beyond.

Cheers PHEV3A'rs, EVADC'rs, and EVnthusiasts, One & All -

On the initial run of the Sun Belt Grand Finale, the "Spirit of DC" rolls quietly along in the EVMode while taking in the scenic Hwy 49 with the Pacific Ocean on one side and then on Skyline Blvd, the San Francisco Bay on the other side ... all en route to Santa Clara and a stayover with San Jose EAA Member, Chuck Olson.

Silicon Valley EAA President, Jerry Pohorsky, got to re-visit with the "Spirit" as well as extend a BIG stack of EAA trifold flyers for the Sun Belt Grand Finale.

This evening, the "Spirit" was charged up and is ready for the Santa Cruz run on Monday -- there's the meet-up with Carol Long, Central and other Coast EAA Members along with some Cabrillo Community College folks and possibly some Santa Cruz Chamber of Commerce members. This is to be at 6:30PM at the New Leaf Restaurant, where the "Spirit" can show & shine for the CCEAA'rs.

Posting stats showed that the "Spirit" at 50-degree Fahrenheit ran along the scenic Hwy 49 and onto Skyline Boulevard ... onto I285, but at blue highway 55MPH speed:
5 x five-minute Blue Bar segments came up on the regular Prius screen, ... then Alas! one popped in at 45MPG! That means the "Spirit" did well over 101MPG for over some 25 minutes.
Afterwards, with the now nicer and neater to use battery pack EVer so operational within pleasing normal ranges, the "Spirit" had these readings: 99.6MPG for 6 miles; 91.8 for 10; 59.0 for 21; 60.3 for 48; and 61.7MPG for 55 miles on into Santa Clara, CA. And opportunity charging at Chuck Olson's place. So amazing to know 101MPG is there with a series of charge-ups!

EVer en route to Santa Cruz,

"Spirit" & EVJerry

PS The "Spirit" took the Cardinals' loss to the Steelers pretty well; after all, it was a SUPER, going-right-down-to-the-wire game!
