Epilogue - Sunday, 26 April 2009 ... from Phoenix, Arizona .. en route to Home Sweet Bisbee

Cheers PHEV3A'rs, EVADC'rs, and EVnthusiasts, One & All -

EPILOGUE: What's next? What's next beside going back and doing LOTS of webblogging ... in order to make a baseline of sorts for the bestseller Classic-in-the-Making, entitled: Plug'in Around America: With the "Spirit" ... and on the Cheap!

The "Spirit of DC" is enjoying her All American status, being shown around the Greater Washington, DC Metropolitean Area with EVADC'rs -- Chip Gribbens, Charlie Garlow, Dave "Goldie" Goldstein, and Joe Lado ... for starters. Charlie is endowing the "Spirit" with a crown of solar panels with Proferssor Bob Bruninga understaking the solar tasking over there in nearby Annapolis, MD. Bob will also check out the APRS - the Automatic Position Recording System, which gave the geographical position of the "Spirit" through out the US of A and Canada ... until just outside of Little Rock, AK, when Alas! a fuse was blown.

Perhaps, this solar crown on the "Spirit" will all be in place at the next EVADC meeting, scheduled for 3rd Tuesday, the 19th of May. EVADC'rs can see decal array of 54 EAA Sister Chapters. See http://www.evadc.org/ for location. At said meeting, EVADC'rs can align behind the X-treme BugEV just like the "Spirit of DC" which is taking on the role of lead vehicle for the "Fun Run in the Sun." See updates: http://www.funruninthesun.org/. Especially for the exact launch date, yet being projected for a Memorial Day launch from DC and bounded for points West until LA, or the Pacific Ocean -- whichever comes first!

Sonn en route from Phoenix to Home, Sweet Bisbe, Arizona ... just to hang out and handle the piles of mail (probably mostly all bills, junk mails, magazines, ... and maybe a scant note or two of acknowledging Congrats!

EVer, ... with more to follow ... with additional Epilogue Days,

Bisbee EVJerry

PS And of course, looking forward to the Borderland EVA Meeting!

PHEV Days 183,184, 185 - Saturday, Sunday, Monday - 18-20 April 2009. "All American Spirit of DC" On the National Mall ... Wrapping Up PHEV3A

Cheers PHEV3A'rs, EVADC'rs, and EVnthusiasts, One & All -

The "All American Spirit of DC" spent the last three days on the National Mall - showing & shining ... even on rainy Monday, at the EVADC Exhibit with the EPA 5th National Sustainable Design EXPO ... with the Capitol as a backdrop. The was the EVfort for wrapping up the Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle All Around America EVducational Tour at the spot where the "Spirit" was christened with "Graphics by Chip" signage ... almost one year ago on Earth Day.

On Saturday morning, Joe Lado, EVADC Exhibit Chair for the EPA 5th EXPO and C0-Chair for "Spirit of DC" PHEV All Around America (PHEV3A) along with his son, Eric, had things organized for the "Spirit" as wel for his own Solar EV - a pure electric Fiero in a delightful yellow with an array of solar panels. Soon, Donor with his Vectrix and Sylvia with her e-scooters were also on display ... on what was a most perfect 76-degree sunny day with thed steps of the Capitol itself as a backdrop some several hundred yards away.

On Monday, ever so rainy had two PBS folks came a'interviewing, first EVJerry regarding the "All American Spirit" and then, Charlie Garlow about the upcoming EVent with a 3-wheeled X-treme BugEV, called "Fun Run in the Sun." See ... maybe just doing a search on ... www.PBS.org/NewsHour for interview by Leigh and photos by Travis. Fingers crossed, of course!

More detailed information to follow. Probably also from San Diego, CA ... and Bisbee, AZ!

And of course, an Epilogue as well, in addition a segway to the upcoming EVducational Tour about Charlie Garlow's X-treme BugEV "Fun Run in the Sun" http://www.funruninthesun.org/. The "Spirit" will be in the role of lead vehicle.

PHEV Day "Off" in Sunny & Bright Orlando ... Due to Severe Storm Warning ... While Hunked Down at Larry Wexler's Homestead, Tuesday, 14 Apil 2009

Cheers PHEV3Ars, EVADC'rs & EVnthusiasts, One & All,

What was to be PHEV Day 180 turned into a PHEV Day Off at Larry Wexler's Homestead to ride out the severe weather experienced in Orlando. Mainly, heavy rains and winds were occurring ... but after the fact ... not knowing if it was to turn into a tornado-type experience a'waiting the "Spirit of DC" should venturing forth to Seminole Community College as scheduled.

Seminole Community College is being set up for Wednesday, 15 April 2009. Or maybe even before getting a lift back to DC, courtesy of the Amtrak Auto Train, on Thursday afternoon, 16 April 2009.

Stand by for edits.

Al Lococo Reports about Traviss Career Center Visit and More from Winter Haven, FL.

EV Jerry arrived Saturday April 11th just in time for dinner. Diane had his vegetarian fare ready for him and we enjoyed catching up on his recent visits to Tallahassee and Tarpon Springs.

Sunday, I got a chance to drive The "Spirit of DC" We stopped at a local friends house. He owns a factory original Prius. Jerry left some info and we took off on a tour of Winter Haven in the Spirit.

This driving experience was enjoyable. Much like driving my EV, "EPT2" (Electric Pickup Truck Two), at times. The big difference is the range of the "Spirit" This vehicle, as others like it will serve as a transitional vehicle for many who will end up eventually owning a BEV (Battery Electric Vehicle). Some day soon all cars will be plug-in cars, either, PHEV's like the "Spirit" or BEVs like my "EPT2". The inflexibility of an ICE only vehicle will be a thing of the past.

Monday Morning we left early for the TRAVISS Career Center. This is a Polk County School which has an Automotive Service Technology Department which was our Destination. We arrived amid a flurry of activity prompted by the planned arrival of Scott Wheeler from the Ledger, the Lakeland newspaper.

The instructors Ron Malone and Charlie Sanders, were great host to the Jerry and the "Spirit".
These instructors are very progressive. TRAVISS is an Alternative Vehicle Training Center. They have a 1995 Solectria E10 which is a conversion of a Chevy S10 done by Solectria for TECO who ddonated the vehicle to TRAVISS.

The students were very enthusiastic. Several signed up for the PolkEVA mailing list, which serves as a means of communication among Polk County residents interested in EV Technology annd related events.

TRAVISS will host an open house on April 30th where PolkEVA list members will bring their EVs for display at the Automotive Service Technology Center.

Thanks Jerry for a very productive visit. We were able to get several new students involved and renewed and invigorated our TRAVISS relationship.

Cheers,
Al Lococo

EVer so glad, Al Lococo, could share his blog above along with pixs as well. Al's been a leading EVlight in so many, many ways! As a man of action, just take a look-see at his e-truck -- EPT2. Traviss Technical School EVent on Monday, 13 April 2009, was serendipitous. Do check out his insightful and extensive website: http://www.evprogress.org/ . Especially Al's eTruck -- EPT2! Also, bookmark that EVProgress site!

Also, EVJerry here has the feeling that Traviss Career Center will soon have the first EVer Community College/Technical Center EAA Educational Chapter!

Also, also, ... EVer so gracious was Al's wife, Diane, a most genuine Hostess, who was amazingly delightful with the cuisine over Hoppity Easter weekend! And beyond!

Tarpon Springs, Florida - Over the past year, Jerry Asher has driven some 33,000 miles through 48 states.

"I haven't had a problem with anything - just my tush," he says with a laugh.

Asher's a kind of a traveling preacher. His sermon is on how electric vehicles should be this country's salvation.

"We could have America energy independent," says Asher.

Asher drives a modified Toyota Prius nicknamed the Spirit of DC and in the back this hybrid has an extra battery boost. "There's 20 of them," Asher says, pointing to a line of batteries under the back hatch.

The extra lead-acid batteries will run the car about twelve miles on just electricity and they increase gas mileage when the car's using both power sources. At 34 miles per hour, the hybrid uses a mix of gas and electricity.

Whenever Asher stops at a destination, he just plugs into household electricity to recharge the batteries. "It costs pennies to use electricity versus dollars for gasoline."

Asher wants the United States to decrease its dependence on foreign oil and thinks these plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV's) are the way to do it.

The conversion to the plug-in is not cheap, but a local shop that does the work says electric vehicles are sparking interest.

"It's a very easy conversion," says George Keramas of Black Bay Technologies. "It takes about two days. The cost is around $5,000 for the entire conversion."

If you're curious about this type of car, there's a local electric vehicle association. The group meets monthly and it's one of the largest in the state.

Asher's trip has been sponsored by similar groups around the country and he says the whole electric idea is on a roll.

TAEVA Tallahassee Area Electric Vehicle Association
TAEVA is the Tallahassee area chapter of the Electric Auto Association or EAA. The EAA is a non-profit educational organization formed in 1967 in San Jose, California. Its mission is to promote the widespread adoption of electric vehicles. Electric vehicles or EV's for short, are a practical, clean and quiet alternative to internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. Electric vehicles will keep our Earth clean and help preserve our natural resources. EV's are a smart and efficient choice for transportation.

FRAN, ROY & JOY's Notice:

The Tallahassee EAA Chapter Takes Off with the Acceleration of a Tesla!

. . .

Yesterday’s meeting of The Tallahassee Electric Automotive Association was a really fun getting together of some great EV energy. Before I go further I will post Andre Smith’s great photos of some of the EVs and folks present. Let me know if you cannot click on this long link and I will see if we can do something to help.

. . .

First, big thanks to Andre Smith for all the work setting up this big event. Andre shows the kind of detailed planning necessary to create a really professional event. Media was there and the cars and people were there, as his photos reflect. One of Andre’s daughters brought a solar powered golf cart from the nearby Tallahassee Community College. She is part of the Engineering Club there and seems really astute about all things engineering-related. Andre’s wife, Lynn, also has a comprehensive knowledge about all things EV-related. You guys may remember how I am often hoping to find other EV-savy women. Well, yesterday I found Lynn and she lives right in my hometown! No offense guys, but we females relate similarly about things and I am so very pleased to find another EV female right here in N. FL!

Then, having Jerry Asher here was lots of fun. He ran around introducing people and talking in his enthusiastic EVJerry-fashion like a large ladle stirring a big soup pot!

Also, thanks to Jerry for giving us a copy of the Plug-In Partners CD before we started on our Electric Vehicle Initiative. The first 9 minutes of that video is a great overview of what is happening in the world of EVs and PHEVs in the U.S. now-a-days. We used that video for each presentation.

Good luck, Jerry, on your ventures in finishing off your U.S. tour.

Thanks to Terry Lowe, superintendant of Fleet Mangement for City of Tallahassee, for providing us with a place to meet.

And thanks to Soul Veg for selling some super vegetarian fare during the meeting, the press interviews and the ride and drives.

Also, much appreciation to Ryan Boyle, owner of the incredible red Tesla Roadster who gave anyone who asked a ride in his great car. He even called to some who were too shy to ask, and gave them a ride. My daughter came back from her ride with her eyes shining to announce, “My life is totally changed!” Since this was my first ride in a certified, really fast car, too, I *understand*.

Later, some battery figures will be tallied out.

However, even with 2 x BB batteries reading 9.97 volts cold and discharged from Run to Montgomery, the "Spirit" worked out with those two batteries charged up to 13.34 and 13.32 volts! At approximately 15MPH, the speed limit on the Gunter Annex, the "Spirit" still checked in at 13.2 e-miles. And the two need-to-be-replaced batteries, now warm and depleted, read: 10.29 and 10.24 volts. The Prius Toyota screen did beyond 6 x 5-minute Blue Bars for over 30 minutes of doing 99.9MPG for a reported 13 miles.

The two shot batteries were replaced late Sunday evening. Battery readings after charging and cooling off were approximately within the 13.20 to 13.40 volt range. The two replacements were: 13.25 and 13.01 volts.

PHEV Day 173, Saturday, 4 April 2009. On to Montgomery, Return to Birmingham, Back to Run to 48th State Capitol - Montgomery!

Cheers PHEV3A'rs, EVADC'rs and EVnthusiasts, One & All,
On the left, the "Spirit" takes another opportunity charge at Home Sweet Porter House on Saturday morn. On right is EVJerry disconnecting plug after Steve's 99.9MPG for 4 miles. Steve's Happy Snaps
The late morning after the night of taking in a Owlabama Mensa Group's "Temperance" event at the Diplomat Deli in Birmingham, the "All American Spirit of DC" and EVJerry followed Host-Hostess Steve and LeAnne to home. Along with Sam, Owlabama Editor, we continuedd delightfully conversating ... with a bottle of cider for EVJerr while there was an opportunity plug-in for the "Spirit."

The "All American Spirit" soon bonded with Steve, as he hypermiled LeAnne's Bro, Marshall ... well, at least 90.3MPG for 4 miles in the up & down Bluff of Birmingham.

While 30+ miles "On to Montgomery," Fox 6 WBRC called! And quite soon, t'was a the "Spirit" doing a "Back to Birmingham" for a videotaping with Reporter, Jonathan Hardison and Photojournalist, Damian Johnson (205) 583-4323. That late afternoon session was most enjoyable. Yet, with a 5:00PM broadcast deadline, no time was there for further visiting. So it was back on the road for the "Spirit" and EVJerry

The Run to Montgomery on Blue Hwy, US 31 (I believe) showed the following tallies:
74.6MPG for 14 miles; 67.18 for 19; 66.3 for 31 ... and then the Fox 6 WBRC call and a hi-speed dash back on Interstate 65 with 60.6MPG for 50 miles; 59.2 for 75! Later, en route back to Montgomery, readings were: 58.7MPG for 92 miles; 58.5 for 122, 58.9 for 155; and finally 59.4MPG for 178 miles.

Once on Maxwell AFB's Gunter Annex, a fill-up was in order before beddy bye: Midgrade 7.316 gallons x $1.95 = $14.33 for a toto of 398.2 miles, which gave a 54.5MPG rating. Note: Mileometer reading showed: 105,678 miles.

Sunday was to be dedicated as an R & R Day ... tho catching up on email and re-adjusting/replacing two BB PbA gel batteries were on the schedule.

Today the "Spirit of DC" took on being an All American .. after hitting Alabama on Blue Highway, called US 78, at approximately 1:31PM. Alabama is the 48th State in the PHEV All Around America (PHEV3A) EVducational Tour. Montgomery is on for tomorrow to be the 48th State Capitol being visited!

After leaving Cousins, Sharon and Christian (Ben & Sharon Asher's son) and Cynthia Meyers (Sharon's Mom, Christian's GrandMom), the "Spirit" set out on Blue Highways -- GA 120 and US 78, the Birmingham Run -- recording as a continuation from Thursday 56.7MPG for 43 miles the following: 52.0 for 57; 53.0 for 73; 54.4 for 95; 55.0 for 112; 55.2 for 121; 55.4 for 134; 54.3 for 143; 54.8 for 160; 55.6 for 164; and 55.4MPG for 169 miles.

Recent Media Blitz'ing occurred in Chattanooga, TN -- one noon day radio talk program with Hosts Jim and Sal on FM 102.3; Kristen Johnson, News Reporter with WDEF News coverage and TV coverage at U of Tennessee Technical Community College... plus elsewhere in CHATTZ another TV spot on Tuesday. Particularly with certain folks giving Chattanooga EVA (CHEVA) President, Randy Whorton, the 'ritual finger' in placing the EAA Decal on the "Spirit." Such included visiting on the run, not only with Randy, but also with CHEVA Media Blitzer, Jim Frierson. Note: CHEVA is 52nd EAA Sister Chapter.

The "All American Spirit" took in a "Temperance" Meet-up with Central Alabama Mensa Group at Diplomat Deli this eve. Hosting in Birmingham this evening are Mensans: Steve & LeAnne Porter.

Jerry Asher of the Electric Auto Association is nearing the end of a yearlong, 48-state tour to promote the PHEV. I am amazed that somehow his national grassroots tour has (apparently) not been covered by EV World.

Can we change that by setting up an interview with Jerry and feeding you some of the material from his very successful “pilgrimage” to Chattanooga?

A second round of visits and test drives today includes the CEO of the electric power distributor, Sen. Lamar Alexander’s office director, the faculty head of the University of Tennessee’s Center for Energy, Transportation and the Environment and the nation’s first dedicated electric vehicle test track (circa 1981).

Subject: News Conference Monday - Electric Vehicle Spirit of DC here in Knoxville

The Future of transportation is here, and is visiting Knoxville on Monday March 30th.

Don’t miss this news conference of the “Sprit of DC”, Plug-In PHEV vehicle, bringing its message of energy independence to East Tennessee.

The team members of the Science Olympiad, 2008 Regional and TN State Champions, Bearden Middle School, will be there to show off the “Spirit”.

Its year-long mission across the country is to educate our youth about viable transportation options of electricity, solar, etc.

The News Conference details are:
When: Monday, March 30, 2009

Where:Bearden Middle School, 1000 Frances Road, west Knoxville (by Middlebrook-Vanosdale intersection) Time: 2:00 p.m.

“EV Jerry” and the “Spirit of DC” Plug-In Hybrid EV All Around America educational tour are nationally recognized, because “Spirit" runs on electricity, and can convert to hybrid propulsion.

The "Spirit" is busy promoting plug-ins at America’s schools. Knoxville schools are next!

Supported by the Knoxville EV Association, EVJerry’s time in East Tennessee will be to share knowledge and ideas of Plug In and Hybrid car technology.

Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle All Around America (PHEV3A) tour with "EV Jerry" Asher began on Earth Day 2008, in front of our Nation’s Capitol.

The PHEV3A mission is to educate America on becoming independent from imported oil. Plug-In EVs and Hybrids use renewable energy sources like solar, wind and hydro-power-electricity. The Spirit of DC will complete its nationwide educational tour back in Washington, DC during 2009 Earth Day weekend in April. There it will join the EPA’s 5th Annual National Sustainable Design Expo.

He’s proved it’s Cheap to Plug-in Around America! Its impressive 2 cents a mile average cost is turning heads.

Alternatives to gas guzzling are here, now.

The "Spirit of DC" Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV3A) EVducational Tour is a non-profit mission, demonstrating alternatives work!

The batteries and technology are available now.

Convert a car to electric today, or buy an electric EV next year.

Hybrids are also immediately available.

The Spirit of DC" tour has included 47 state capitals and 55 Electric Auto Association (EAA) sister chapters --

All this attained in a vehicle propelled by electricity: the Toyota Prius conversion.

On 31 May 2008, the "Spirit of DC" launched its EVducating tour.

It’s been traversing our east and west coasts for ten months, covering more than 30,000 miles, with Tennessee being the 47th state visited!

So far, it has cost roughly only 2 cents for each electric mile traveled.
You, too can be plug-in anywhere around America on the cheap!

Check out how PHEV3A is doing; visit www.SpiritofDC.com

The "Spirit" is the first PHEV EVer to do the USA, and even five Provinces of Canada!

The “Spirit” shows we can sever our dependence on foreign oil, stop funding terrorism through foreign oil imports, slash our transportation costs, use environmentally friendly transportation and reduce greenhouse pollution. Something good there for everyone, in the free world, that is.
