On a sunny and bright Tuesday morn, three Prius PHEVs were shining & showing at Arizona's Clean Cites Coalitions and Arizona Department of Environmental Quality-sponsored legislative breakfast & award, entitled: Arizona's Road to Clean Air and Energy Security. The EVent was honoring Arizona's military bases and civic leaders who have promoted clean fuels.

The All American "Spirit of DC" was joined in PluginSolutions row by Todd Barlow's Green Motors' PHEV with 4kW lead acid battery pack and Phoenix Electric Auto Association President, Jim Stack's 10kW "Big Kahune" Li-ion pack, which is capable of a 30-40 all electric range, and clearly demonstrates the capability of 101MPG assisted by electricity. Others joined in to (AER) be among those demonstrating alternative energy, such as solar and ethanol.

The "Spirit" basically demonstrated an empty battery box with its contactors and wiring as well as on the outside the hydraulic lifts for access to the spare, the charger, the 110-volt inverter, and the solar panels. The "Spirit" is awaiting its upgraded PluginSolutions PHEV Kit with 4kW Li-ion battery pack, which should allow upwards of a 20 AER range.(versus the previous 10-12 AER with its PbA pack). After viewing what a PHEV kit set-up would look like, people could then progress on to two fully operational Prius PHEVs for further "seeing-is-believing" experience upfront.

After a six week break of sorts, the "Spirit of DC" and EVJerry are able to do some reporting out with narratives about the team-building EVforts underway. Particularly with Tucscon Clean Cities Program Director with Pima Associations of Government (PAG), Colleen Crowninshield CCrowninshield@pagnet.org, and her chief assistant, Kathryn Van Kirk KVanKirk@pagnet.org (520) 792-1093.

And also, Bob Oldfather of Bookmans www.Bookmans.com - a dynamic Tucson Clean Cities Coalition member, who has installed, or will install, six Coloumb challenging stations at all six Booksmans (three stores in Tucson, two in Phoenix and one in Flagstaff). Note: Bob's love of EVs goes back to having two GM EV1s. Besides owning a few classic EVs, Bob has in mind an EV Museum. EVJerr here has in mind a Bookmans Living Plug-in EV Museum...so stand by for more info on this concept.

First of all, all such undertaking so far involved have taken re-situating from Bisbee to Tucson. in order to take into key team-building resources in Tucson.

Note: Beside wanting to write the bestseller called "Plug'n America: With the "Spirit" and on the Cheap! (just need simply need a ghostwriter, preferrably a 'starving' one), EVJerr here thinks it's also the best of times for writing another, and with a catchy title: The Tales of Two Cities!

Now, It's about the "Spirit" being situated in Tucson and at Milagro Cohousing. See pixs above. Milagro has in its parking spaces a number of Yahoo! availabe 110-volt outlets (see www.MilagroCohousing.org). EVJerry here is taking quarters and office space at 3023 N. Gaia Place, Tucson, AZ 85745 in order to work on said team-building of a second type of PHEV3A--that is instead of Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle All Around America, it'll be PHEV All Around Arizona. Or simply, the Plug-in Arizona EVducation Tour, which is to kick off for all 15 AZ counties, once the sunbirds take flight in April.

The "Spirit of DC" took EVJerry back on the road ... again! This time it was cruising down from Santa Rosa, CA (where holidays plus were taken at the True North Health Center) and coming to Chuck Olson's homestead in Santa Clara.

Such was in prep to hear Nissan-Renault CEO, Carlos Ghosn's presentation at the Churchill Breakfast Club entitled "The Future of Clean Transporation" with Ray Lane as Moderator. Also, courtesy of Karen Tucker, Churchill Club CEO, Electric Auto Association members and associates were invited to come to this Tuesday, 12 Jan 2010 EVent at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Palo Alto. Carlos underscored the Zero Emission Revolution effect underway by emphasizing that Nissan now has some 45,000 orders for the pure electric - the LEAF. And that's from just two months ago!

En route after a few days visiting with Asher Family members and friends in San Diego, CA, the "Spirit" was hypermiling along in the 50's MPG on the sunny and bright California I-5 to Santa Rosa, on Wednesday, 23 December 2009. Plan is for some health-minded R & R at the True North Health Center in order to get EVJerr into physical shape for what "Plug-in Arizona Educational Tour" for 2010. One EVision under 2009 resolution may be evolving into the Bookmans Plug-in Arizona: Clean Cities Educational Tour.

Yet, the "Spirit of DC" did drop by the Toyota Headquarters in Torrance, California, in order to have a Look-See and in anticipation of a future visit in 2010. After all, the "Spirit" is an All American ... and a future home, after Plug-in All Around America, should be the Smithsonian Institute under Toyota auspices. More on that EVision as we blog along!

The "Spirit of DC" came to Tucson Town for the Bookmans Grand Charging Station Celebration at 9:15ish AM on Saturday, 19 December 2009 in order to be part of the grand mingling going on as well as to get an opportunity charger, !por seguro!

The picture shows the slot at Bookmans with the Coulomb Charger being examined ... while waiting for the white "750" Tesla to come down from Phoenix and become the first EV to start charging ... even tho at a Level 1. The parking spot on the East side of Bookmans, just outside of one of Tucson's favorite spots at Grand Road and Campbell Ave.n

The "Spirit of DC" is shown taking advantage of Bookmans in order to enjoy her 'opportunity charge' with full permission as given to any EV by Bookmans owner, Bob Oldfather as EVent is wrapping down. Note: "Spirit" is perhaps the only PHEV in Tucson at this time.

"Spirit" at Safford, Graham County, Today, 15 December 2009. Yet, Clifton, Greenlee County, ... Tomorrow in 2010 ...After Holidays and Re-Grouping!

It definitely appears that winter is even setting in on the "Spirit" as well as Arizona. The holidays seem quite upon us while essentially cruising quietly along the blue AZ Highway191. The day was sunny & bright. We trekked out of Bisbee a way East on what was one time one of America's premier highway -- US Hwy 80, which stretched from the Pacific Ocean there San Diego, CA, to the Atlantic Ocean, just below Savannah, GA.

Then, it was North for a 110 miles sojourn! After her 120,000 maintenance service, the "Spirit" with a new set of sparkplugs was PHEV'ing nicely along the scenery of the Chihuahua Desert, intermingled with farms and ranchs in the Southwest's Apacheria, where Cochise and Geronimo roamed long ago.

Destination: Safford, Graham County in order to 'do lunch' with the Safford Rotary Club at its Tuesday weekly meeting at China Taste Restaurant on Hwy 70. EVJerry here was treated as the guest of KATO 1230 AM Radio Station General Manager, Davis Nathan; he even got at least 5 minutes to expound upon how Plug-ins can regain America's energy independence with good ole Arizona homegrown electrons. And other ET points, too! Note: ET meaning Energy Technology is attributed to Tom Friedman of the New York Times.

After a photo session at the Graham County Services Bldg, some Internet checking of/sending out emails from the Safford Public Library ... and developing a sensing that a run to Clifton-Morenci, Greenlee County, wasn't in the cards -- no real response had been forthcoming from previous email efforts to coordinate a visit with Greenlee, comparable to Graham County. So the idea is now to re-group the effort for the "Spirit of DC Plug-in Arizona Educational Tour" for distant county visits after the holidays and in 2010. Further welcoming coordination is deemed necessary. Likely candidates appear as: the Rotary Clubs, Toastmasters International, ... or civic groups such as Lions Club, American Legion, VFW, and the like.

Also, a keen undercurrent of a feeling involves the Tesla Roadster Tour evolving. It's a LA-Detroit run, launching on Thursday, 17 December 2009. And the "Spirit" wants to be involved! Even be the lead vehicle again as done with Tesla run in July 2009 from the East Coast to West Coast (see again http://www.renewamericaroadtrip.com/ )

After some six "Plug-in Arizona Educational Tour" days on the road - taking in Bookmans in Tucson, Florence in Pinal County, the Phoenix Fiesta of Electric Lights Parade, Parker in La Paz County along with the London Bridge in Lake Havasu, and Yuma in Yuma County, the "Spirit" is back in Home Sweet Bisbee. The "Spirit" is all charged up, but it's not quite the same for EVJerr, except mentally where it comes to next "Plug-in Arizona" EVentures.

After the "Spirit's" 120,000-mile maintenance service at Toyota Sierra, set for Monday morn, the "Spirit" may be on the road again to two more county seats of government -- Safford in Graham County and Clifford in Greenslee. However, request for assistance is shifting to aligning with local Toastmasters and Rotary Club members, who definitely seem to have helping hands and ears for listening to the "FuturEV is Electric" as based on the Yuma Sunrise Rotary Club's graciousness.

Also, definitely in mind is a Tucson return to Bookmans for the Grand Opening of its Charging Station on Saturday morn, 19 December 2009. Owner, Bob Oldfather, has extended a personal invitation to the "Spirit" to charge up at 1130 E. Grant Road. And assumingly at the other Bookmans in Tucson as well as in Mesa. Just a short entry until a YOU TUBE link (fingers crossed!) is obtained -- from Yuma's KYMA Channel 11 website www.KYMA.com , the below entry, as copied and pasted to the blog, at least documented the All American "Spirit of DC" being in Yuma, AZ. One slight note: The "Spirit" doesn't quite think of herself as a "power car" ... however, maybe solar enpowered a tad with the solar panels.

Power car makes a stop in Yuma

Forget the Energizer Bunny, one plug in hybrid just keeps going and going.

Wednesday, the Toyota Prius Plus made a pit stop in Yuma to educate people on solar energy. This high tech car has traveled over 40,000 miles and doesn't plan on slowing down any time soon. The driver, Jerry Asher, says he's promoting energy independence.

It's a hot idea he thinks will promote jobs and move the U.S. into a new era of technology.
Asher says an electric equivalent of a gallon of gas for this car costs about 70 cents compared to the national average of gas, which is up to almost three dollars. [End of KYMA notice].

After some 240 miles a'trucking Alas! on Interstate 8 from Yuma, the "Spirit" came into Tucson in the early evening for a restful stayover with friend, Cheryl Schroeder, out in the Sabino Canyon Area. While on the road East, KYMA Channel 11 NBC was covering the "Spirit's" Plug-in Arizona Educational Tour at 5:00PM (later at 10:00PM), thanks to Reporter Carson Cherland (928) 539-7111 News@KYMA.com. In five days, the "Spirit" has taken in by design three Arizona County Seats of Government -- Pinal County, La Paz County and Yuma County. But without any particular success in meeting county supervisors (tho one did read her email notice).

New approach for "Plug-in Arizona Educational Tour" is being entertained ... and planned out, once back in Home Sweet Bisbee for tusch recuperation after some 1,000 miles on the trail -- instead of endeavoring to enroll Chambers of Commerce folks, it seems that fellow Toastmasters may just do the trick, as evident with the Yuma contact and hand-off to a Rotary contact.

Note: Charlie Garlow http://www.funruninthesun.org/ definitely approves ... being a fairly new Rotarian himself. Seemingly this will be most excellent for the three wheeled Xtreme BugE EVenture, coming in June 2010, that Charlie along with his sidekick, TR (Tyrannusaurus Rex - a cuty as heck mini-dachhund) will be driving from DC to LA and return. So with Yuma Sunrise Rotary Club, being so gracious to the "Spirit," ... it just seems a nature to follow up with the Xtreme BugE, especially at 6:30AM in Arizona in June's warmth. Perhaps again with KYMA Channel 11's Carson videotaping Charlie, TR, the Xtreme BugE ... along with the "Spirit of DC" with Tagalong, EVJerr, and an EVADC support team as well. Something to keep in mind.

Once back in Bisbee, travel plans for the "Spirit" will be looking at Safford, the Graham County seat of government as well as Globe, Gila County, maybe even Tucson, Pima County, and even Phoenix, Maricopa County. Hopefully in the days to come next week ... or in 2010.

FuturEV sojourns do depend, of course, on weather factors. Note: The "Spirit" isn't too keen on snow! Nor is EVJerr. Both delight in Arizona's sunny & bright along the blue highways, especially viewing sites and sounds of yesteryear, such a the Gila Bend Museum, while taking a late lunch rest stop. Also, the "Spirit" is way overdue for a 120,000 miles service maintenance by some 2,000 plus miles so a visit to Sierra Toyota is due.

After taking a sunny and bright cruise down the Blue Highway called US 95 from Lake Havasu thru Parker, AZ and then some 120 miles South, the "Spirit" found her "sense of Yuma' in Yuma County and got situated at Best Western, courtesy of Wick Communications, Sierra Vista, AZ.

Thanks to Yuma Toastmaster, Ralph Williams, things went from dippitydoo (nothing happening!) to serendipity (delightful possibility!) upon contacting Mike Perry, a definite solar kind of guy -- Solar Consultant with United Sustainable Energy www.USSolarEnergy.com. Mike invited the "Spirit" and EVJerr to the Yuma Sunrise Rotary Club breakfast at 6:30AM on Wednesday morn. Best offer yet in Yuma was gladly accepted!

Press releases also went out to the Yuma Sun by email and to KYMA Channel 11 NBC by phone.

Also, the Yuma County seat of government is on the photo target list prior to a Wednesday departure back to Bisbee via Tucson, just in case any one of the five Yuma County Supervisors wanted to "bond" with the "Spirit" and have a photo op.

After a considerable wait "in the dark" so to speak, the Phoenix EAA Plug-insamazingly a'glow rolled into the night amidst 100's of thousands of merry spectators. The "Spirit" was duly impressed with the multitude -- maybe 500,000 (give or take a handful!) of Phoenicians merrily cheering all of us on. Especially regarding the Fiesta of Lights Parade's GREEN Theme! Most amazing parade that the "Spirit" and EVJerr here have EVer been in. T'was our Rookie EVent in Arizona! Yet, in 2010, next year's parade, we'll be more than prepared ... !

Reminding Note: The "Spirit" had her first parade -- Inaugural Plug-in Parade in Santa Monica, California, on Saturday afternoon before the actual Presidential Inauguration on Tuesday, 20 January 2009.

Now to focusing back on the "Plug-in Arizona Educational Tour" with an afternoon run on a blue highway or two to Parker, La Paz County. It's on the radar screen for Monday and, hopefully, it'll turn out to be more than just a photo op. Maybe even a welcomed run to Lake Havasu ... depending upon an invitation or two.

Afterward, it's a run to Yuma, possibly for early Monday evening in order to see what unfolds in Yuma County on Tuesday as well as Wednesday morning ... beforewe begin rolling back to Home Sweet Bisbee via Tucson.

Dang! if time just doesn't jet by, since last posting ... at least! And EVJerr was blogging from Tucson with a couple sites to hit -- the popular bookstore, Bookman's is installing two e-vehicle chargers at two sites and one in Phoenix (See Arizona Daily Star, Thursday, 3 Dec "Ground broken for e-vehicle chargers" article by Dan Sorenson) ... before 'booking it' to Florence, Pinal County on the "Plug-in Arizona Educational Tour," on this sunny & bright Friday, 4 December 2009. Florence became the second county seat of government to be visited after Nogales, Santa Cruz County. But Alas! no body was home. Still an opportunity prevailed for a few happy snaps. And TBP (to be posted)! Also, a return to Florence will be there possibly for January 2010 for an energy fair of sorts.

So while in Tucson, the "Spirit" did check out at least one future Bookmans charging site, where also a few happy snaps were taken as seen above. TORRANCE, Calif., December 2, 2009 --

The 2010 Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid vehicle (PHV) will make it’s North American debut today at the Los Angeles Auto Show.

Built specifically to support a global demonstration program that begins this month, the Prius PHV is based on the third-generation Prius. The vehicle expands Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy Drive technology with the introduction of a first generation lithium-ion battery that enables all-electric operation at higher speeds and longer distances than the conventional Prius hybrid. When fully charged, the vehicle is targeted to achieve a maximum electric-only range of approximately 13 miles and will be capable of achieving highway speeds up to 60 mph in electric-only mode. For longer distances, the Prius PHV reverts to “hybrid mode” and operates like a regular Prius. This ability to utilize all-electric power for short trips or hybrid power for longer drives alleviates the issue of limited cruising range encountered with pure electric vehicles.

Beginning later this month, a total of 350 vehicles will begin delivery in Japan and Europe in support of model programs with business and government partners aimed at raising societal awareness of, and preparedness for, this important new technology.

Beginning early next year, 150 vehicles will start arriving in the U.S., where they will be placed in regional clusters with select partners for market/consumer analysis and technical demonstration.

On the consumer side, the U.S. program will allow Toyota to gather real world vehicle-use feedback to better understand customer expectations for plug-in technology. On the technical side, the program aims to confirm, in a wide variety of real world applications, the overall performance of first-generation lithium-ion battery technology, while spurring the development of public-access charging station infrastructure.

All vehicles will be equipped with data retrieval devices which will monitor activities such as how often the vehicle is charged and when; whether the batteries are depleted or being topped off during charging; trip duration, all-EV driving range, combined mpg and so on.

“This program is a necessary first step in societal preparation, in that it allows us the unique opportunity to inform, educate and prepare customers for the introduction of plug-in hybrid technology,” said Irv Miller, TMS group vice president, environmental and public affairs. “When these vehicles come to market, customers must understand what to expect and if this technology is the right fit for them.”

In October, Toyota announced its first regional program partnership with Xcel Energy’s SmartGridCity program in Boulder, Colo. Ten PHVs will be placed with Boulder residents who will participate in an interdisciplinary research project coordinated by the University of Colorado at Boulder Renewable and Sustainable Energy Institute (RASEI), a new joint venture between the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) and the University of Colorado at Boulder.

RASEI, Xcel Energy and TMS will use this program to gather data on vehicle performance and charging patterns, consumer behavior and preferences, as well as electric utility/customer interactions. The locale offers the additional benefit of monitoring high altitude, cold climate performance of Toyota’s first generation lithium-ion battery.

Additional partners will be announced soon. Regional programs are currently slated for California, Washington D.C., New York, Oregon and Pennsylvania. Each placement scenario will have a variety of ‘use cases’ or driving conditions to gain maximum input to vehicle performance and customer needs.

To assist with customer education, Toyota has launched a PHV demonstration program website – http://www.priusphv.com/ . At the site, visitors can learn more about the technology, follow the program’s progress and, once the vehicles are deployed, track the performance of the demonstration program fleet. This transparent communication of vehicle performance and real world data will allow customers to make informed decisions when considering the purchase of a plug-in hybrid vehicle.

It’s All About The Battery
The battery powering the Prius PHV is the first lithium-ion drive-battery developed by Toyota and its joint venture battery production company, Panasonic Electric Vehicle Energy (PEVE). In early November, PEVE began producing the first of more than 500 lithium batteries on a dedicated assembly line at its Teiho production facility in Japan.

PEVE is the world’s leading producer of nickel-metal hydride batteries for automotive drive applications, having surpassed two million units in total production volume. Nickel-metal batteries are ideal for mass producing affordable conventional hybrid vehicles due to their low cost, excellent quality, high reliability and moderate-demand charge-sustaining operation. Lithium-ion batteries, on the other hand, are more promising for pure electric and plug-in hybrid applications which require higher energy density to meet the higher demands of charge-depleting operation (large swings in charge/discharge). And, although lithium-ion batteries are less expensive in terms of materials, they are more expensive than nickel-metal in terms of production costs.

This first-generation lithium battery has undergone more than three years of coordinated field testing in Japan, North America and Europe in a wide variety of climatic environments and driving conditions. Using approximately 150 conventional hybrids (mostly Prius), the field test vehicles logged well over a million combined miles. In the end, the battery was deemed both reliable and durable, confirming that it could indeed be used in conventional hybrid applications in the future, depending on further developments in cost reduction.

The battery will now be placed into service in the 500 Prius PHVs dedicated to Toyota’s global demonstration program which begins in December. Operating in a more severe charge-depleting mode, the battery’s overall performance in a broad range of vehicle-use applications will be confirmed.

Asher recently retired from the U.S. Army in Washington, D.C., and moved to Bisbee, he said. Now he’s on a new mission to convert America to plug-in cars. He has driven his 2005 Prius, dubbed “Spirit of DC,” to 48 state capitals and five Canadian provinces, and now he’s launching a “Plug-in Arizona Tour,” he said.Spirit is a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV). With a 110-volt inverter and solar panels on the roof and hood, the car can get a boost for its battery from the sun or any electrical source.Asher drove to Nogales High School on Tuesday, plugged in the battery outside the automotive shop and gave Ruben Verdugo’s students a look at the future.“This country is about life, liberty and the pursuit of wheels,” Asher told the students. He urged them to “kick gas because your future depends on it.”Asher never opened the hood to show the engine. Instead, students gathered around the rear of the car and checked the large battery pack.It can be charged with “American homegrown electrons, not OPEC-related molecules of oil, on regular household electricity,” Asher said.If a hybrid is converted to a PHEV, it can reach a top speed of about 52 mph in electric mode before the gasoline engine takes over. This enables the car to run much longer on electricity, Asher said in an interview. When the juice from the larger pack is used up, Spirit reverts back to driving like a regular Prius hybrid.This translates into gas mileage of up to 100 miles per gallon, Asher said. On a recent trip from Bisbee to Phoenix, the Spirit averaged 56 miles per gallon, he said.“Electric motors are more reliable than internal combustion engines,” Verdugo told his students. Then he asked them what performance meant to them.“Is it how fast can you get from point A to point B?” he asked. “If gas mileage is important to you, this is it.”“Spirit of DC” has two meanings ��“ “direct current” and “drive carefully,” Asher told the students. How you drive has a big impact on gas mileage. If you slow down before a stoplight, this keeps a hybrid car in the cheaper electric mode, he said.“Fuel is going up,” said student Sergio Jimenez. He told the Nogales International he was researching hybrid vehicles for his senior project. “We have to find an alternative fuel source.”Right now, only the Toyota Prius can be converted to a plug-in, Asher said in an interview. Other vehicles could be modified to run on electric mode. He proposed a government-funded “cash for conversions” program as a follow-up to the “cash for clunkers” program.Employees at the Santa Cruz County supervisors’ office share a Honda Civic hybrid for driving on the job, said Supervisor John Maynard. He encouraged the county to buy the car in 2004, when a state energy conservation grant paid half the $22,000 cost, he said.The Honda gets 45 to 50 miles per gallon, Maynard said. Off the job, he drives a Toyota Prius hybrid.Horne Ford in Nogales has sold a “handful” of hybrid cars to “environmentally conscious” buyers, said Tony Griffin, owner and general manager. Currently, he has one hybrid Escape SUV and one Fusion, a five-passenger sedan, on the lot.The hybrid versions of those cars cost $5,000 to $6,000 more than the gas-engine models, Griffin said. “This technology will definitely get cheaper. The plug-ins are coming from every manufacturer, so it’s just a matter of time before they get here.”

"Plug-in Arizona Educational Tour" Update -- "Spirit of DC's" Visit to Nogales High School with Nogales International Reporter, Tuesday, 24 Nov 2009

The "Spirit of DC" and EVJerr rolled quietly into Nogales, AZ, just before noon, this Tuesday, 24 Nov 2009. It initiated the start of the "Plug-in Arizona Educational Tour" for educating one AZ County at a time! After visiting with Nogales International newspaper staff, Reporter Denise Holley, EVJerr and the "Spirit" headed over to Nogales High School in order to link up with Automotive Instructor, Ruben Verdugo and his Class. Interestingly enough, the Automotive Class is "into" the study of hybrids at this time. How perfect! And of course, now Plug-ins for extra credit!

Most likely, the All American "Spirit of DC" made History again today -- becoming the first EVer Plug-in to be seen at Nogales High School. And that's what the "Spirit" is about -- showing and telling with 'seeing-is-believing' attitude of what a plug and an extra battery pack can do! A plug and a pack can make a car a 101 MPG vehicle aided by electricity ... ! Plug-ins can be moving the USA to regain its energy independence with good ole homegrown American, if not Arizona solar, electrons! See also <http://www.nusd.k12.az.us/Schools/nhs/>

Some 20 students were game to bask in the sun and visually take in the "Spirit" with solar panels a'charging ... along with a 110-v AC opportunity charge provided as well. While Denise was documenting the scene, EVJerr began his EVnthusiastic theme -- the spiel on "Kick Gas!" in order to underscore at least one key aspect in these teenagers' minds -- "Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Wheels!" -- Yupe! Wheels, Guys! 'Cause if you're without wheels, which is due to $4, $5, $6/gallon for gasoline, then "Happiness" is not likely yours! Just too carito! ?Es verdad?

Also, turning into "students" and hanging out in the back of the crowd as well, were the Nogales HS Principal, Fernando Parra, and Santa Cruz County Supervisor, Manual "Manny" Ruiz -- they became plugged into the study of Plug-ins! Particularly to the Plug-in Hybrids Electric Vehicle (PHEV) like the Toyota Prius before them as well as converting internal combustion engines into pure Electrics! The "Plug-in Arizona Tour" with the "Spirit of DC" on its Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle All Around Arizona (PHEV3A) Educational Tour is underway for Tuesday noon, 24 November 2009. Do keep in mind that the "Spirit of DC" is a PHEV, which is a modified Toyota Prius that has a second, larger battery pack and a plug, along with solar panels and a 110-volt inverter. That larger battery pack, charged with good ole American homegrown electrons (not OPEC-related molecules of oil),on regular household electricity, run alone as an electric car for a much longer period of time. When the electricity from the larger pack is used up, the "Spirit" reverts back to acting like a regular Toyota Prius Hybrid, using both electricity and gasoline intermittently as required.

The "Spirit of DC" along with EVJerry has unfortunately experienced a series of delays on various fronts. However, slowly but ever so slowly yet, with a bit of steadyfastness, the "Tour de AZ - Spirit of DC Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle All Around Arizona" moves! EVer so sorry for delays in webblogging for last couple weeks! The "Spirit" and EVJerry here had hoped for some worthwhile news to report out on, as we move towards Nogales and the Santa Cruz County Seat of Government. But Alas! it was wait, delay, ... delay, wait, ... Alas!

Right now, with only PbA battery PHEV Kit graciously supplied by Todd Barlow of www.GreenMotorsInc.com out of Phoenix, but with the Charlie Garlow-donated APR solar panels wired up and charging"Tour de AZ" now, the "Spirit" can show how we should be supporting what Felix Kramer of www.CALCars.org underscores as "Cash for Conversions" along the lines of "Cash for Clunkers"... with a PHEV Kit, solar panels and a 110-volt inverter on-board. Target date: Tuesday, 26 November 2009 ... beginning with Nogales - Santa Cruz County.

Belowin photo is Bill "Safari" Hammons in forefront of the PluginAmerica Booth at the "Kick Gas Festivals" (see www.KickGasFestival.com>) . Bill, former EVA of San Diego Prez, is credited with the "Electric Drag'in" EVent, which was the forerunner for first "Kick Gas Festival" and hence, the second one. From below left to right standing are: Todd Barlow of Green Motors of Phoenix, AZ, and Colby Trudeau, PIA Coordinator, who is also on the PluginAmerica Board of Directors ... and just happens to be a UCSD student, and there sitting are: Professor Jim Murray and EVJerry Asher

The next picture below show /Todd Barlow of Green Motors www.GreenMotorsInc.com, who brought the "Spirit of DC" over from Phoenix in order to demo the Plug-in ... even with a PbA battery pack.

Note: Todd furthered the "Spirit's" showing by swapping out from his Green Motors Prius PHEV, its own PdA battery pack for display only. Wires were not hooked up.

Todd and EVJerry took the "Spirit" back to Phoenix, AZ, on Sunday, 25 October 2009.

Currently, the "Spirit" is with EVJerr in Home Sweet Bisbee. More pixs in next sequence.
